Physical and chemical properties Study guide

Chemistry is the study of matter and how matter changes. What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter and how matter changes.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

What are properties as related to chemistry? Properties are characteristics that are used to define matter. Physical Properties Chemical Properties

What is a physical property?

What is a physical property? A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.

The ability of one substance to dissolve into another. What is Solubility? The ability of one substance to dissolve into another. Why is solubility considered a physical property? Solubility is a physical property because the substance that has dissolved can return to it’s original state.

Name five examples of physical properties

What is a chemical property? A chemical property is a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into a different substance.

Examples of chemical properties include:

Some additional Chemical Properties are: Tarnish Rust Tarnish

What is a pure substance? A pure substance is a single kind of matter with its own makeup and properties.

Examples of pure substance are:

Pure substances compared to Non-Pure Substance On the other hand, the batter for a blueberry muffin is not a pure substance. It contains flour, butter, sugar, salt, blueberries and other ingredients that can vary with the recipe. Pure substances compared to Non-Pure Substance Pure substances have a specific chemical composition and properties. They are the same no matter where you find them:
