Widening Gap Supply Demand Growing population Aging population Supply of Healthcare Professionals Demand for Healthcare Services Demand Supply Growing population Aging population More chronic disease More people insured Emergency Departments overwhelmed

Traditional focus of EMS Provide emergency treatment for persons suffering acute medical problems in community settings, while transporting such persons to a hospital emergency department, and when needed, in the emergency department until taken over by hospital staff.

Emerging HealthCare Delivery Models Community Paramedicine (CP) is a new and evolving model of community-based health care in which paramedics function outside their customary emergency response and transport roles in ways that facilitate more appropriate use of emergency care resources and/or enhance access to primary care for medically underserved populations. Independently developed Multiple forms Designed to address specific local problems and to take advantage of locally developed collaborations between and among emergency medical services and other health care and social service providers. Improve access to and quality of care while also reducing costs.

New More appropriate use of emergency care services Financial savings Improved coordination and continuity of care Treat at the scene of the emergency Lower # emergency department visitors

New More appropriate use of emergency care services Divert frequent emergency department visitors with non-urgent medical conditions to more appropriate destinations Financial savings Improved coordination and continuity of care Treat non-urgent medical conditions Lower # emergency department visitors
