THE IMPORTANCE OF ADVOCACY

WHAT IS ADVOCACY? Speaking out in favor of something, such as a cause, idea, or policy Occurs when individuals engage in dialogue about an issue they care about

PERKINS & FUNDING OVERVIEW Schools use Perkins funding to purchase equipment, curriculum materials, staff development, career counseling, hiring staff and expansion of CTE programs. Budgets have been chipped away at several funding sources, but Perkins has been especially impacted

ADVOCACY’S IMPORTANCE FOR FCCLA Funding cuts hurt schools and chapters (No funding, no program) Building partnerships with business and industry stakeholders Stakeholders crave the opportunity to interact with youth

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN ELEVATOR SPEECH: Personal testimonies always best, so begin to craft your message. Integrate your valuable and unique experiences with FACS/FCCLA to provide credibility to your point. Buzzwords

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN ELEVATOR SPEECH: Structure of Elevator Speech Introduction to Self & Position (GNAP) Reason Conclude: Integrate a call to action, provide contact information “Can we count on your support of reauthorizing the Perkins Act?”
