Listen to the Lyrics and tell me… What is this song about? The injustice of the Vietnam Draft

Lyrics to Fortunate Son Some folks are born made to wave the flag Ooh, they're red, white and blue And when the band plays "Hail to the chief" Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no Some folks are born silver spoon in hand Lord, don't they help themselves, oh But when the taxman comes to the door Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no Released in 1969 by Creedance Clearwater Revival. Criticizing militant patriotic behavior and those who support the use of military force without having to "pay the costs" themselves (either financially or by serving in a wartime military)

Doves vs. Hawks Should continue & increase forces in Vietnam (Hawks) Opposed war & wanted troops to withdraw from Vietnam (Doves)

Need for a draft: First combat troops are sent to Vietnam in 1965 By 1968 the number of young men signing up for the military had dramatically decreased So, in 1969 the U.S. enforced a Draft

Vietnam Draft: Draft- System that selects individuals to involuntarily join the military 1940: FDR passes the Selective Service Act An estimated 1.7 million MEN between the ages of 18-26 were drafted from 1969-1972 using a Draft Lottery. 1973: The draft was abolished

Options if you were drafted… 1. Go to Boot camp 2. Flee the country (mostly Canada) 3. Apply for an exemption 4. Go to Jail 5. Conscientious Objector

Selective Service (Draft) classifications 1-A – Ready for immediate induction (no deferment) 1-D – Army Reserve 1-Y – Qualified for military service only in time of national emergency (eliminated Dec. 10, 1971) 2-S – Student deferment (temporary delay) 3-A – Extreme hardship to dependants 4-F – Unqualified for military service (exemption)

Enlistee: An individual who voluntarily joins the military - Sons of WWII veterans

Draft Dodger: A drafted individual who evades going into the military An estimated 70,000 men fled to Canada Why Canada?

Conscientious Objector: A drafted individual who opposes going to the war based on moral grounds. Religious purposes were often used (Mennonites, Amish, Quakers) Must apply when registering for the Selective Service (not always complied)

Deferment Some famous deferments include… - An option available that exempted one from the draft. Examples of Deferments included: 1. Ministerial School 2. Medical issues (yourself or family) 3. The number of one’s dependants 4. Working in a war industry 5. Other reasons deemed sufficient by the draft authorities Some famous deferments include…

Kareem Abdul Jabbar 4-F deferment (Too Tall)

Joseph Biden 1963-68, five 2-S deferments, ruled 1-Y in 1968

Dick Cheney Applied for 5 draft deferment (2-S and 3-A, wife pregnant)

Bill Clinton Classified 1-D (Army Reserve) Bill Clinton Classified 1-D (Army Reserve). However, he never shows for Arkansas ROTC

Rush Limbaugh 2-S (1969-70) 1-Y (24-Nov-1970)
