Teammates January 17, 2016 Lee Bennett The Meaning of Marriage by: Timothy & Kathy Keller “Service: Marriage Isn’t About You” Compliments Ch. 1 & 2 in book “The Secret of Marriage” “The Power for Marriage” Teammates January 17, 2016 Lee Bennett

“Service—Marriage isn’t about you.” Play DVD (Sorry! Not available here.) {DVD available online.} As you listen to the discussion on the DVD, what key principles for marriage did you hear? How does the idea that it is “not about you” help you build a healthy marriage? How has selfishness worked against this idea in your marriage?

Feedback Ask several tables to share Summarize main points

Table discussion In the discussion, Tim Keller said that marriage has both horizontal and vertical dimensions. The purpose of the horizontal dimension—our relationships with other people—is character change and community building. The vertical dimension—our relationship with Jesus—fuels us to serve our horizontal relationships. In what ways has your vertical relationship with Jesus affected your horizontal relationship with others?

2nd part of question What has helped you keep your relationship with God as the primary love relationship in your life? In what ways can your friends, spouse, and those in your community help you, and how can you help them? What are ways to make sure that we are not expecting other people to meet the needs that only God can fulfill?

Final Question In the concluding remarks, Kathy Keller summed up the Christian approach to marriage as “gospel re-enactment.” That is, the interactions between a husband and wife are to serve as a dynamic retelling of the story of Christ’s love and sacrifice for the church. How would you explain the phrase “gospel re-enactment?” What would this look like in your marriage?

Reading assignments Please read Ch.3 and 5 in the Keller book Reread the book of Ephesians, especially chapter 5

Questions for Marriage Plan (p. 26) 1.-What can I do to serve you this week? 2.-What can I do to help you love God and be refueled in His love this week? 3.-Are there any big-picture areas in our lives where I can serve you and our family?
