Aircraft Weight (with the Configuration Shown) for Transits Basic Operating Mass = 29395* kg Zero Fuel Mass with proposed minimum crew (2 Pilots, 1 Engineer, 1 Ops) = 29644* kg Max T/O Mass = 42184 kg Therefore there is 12540* kg available for extra crew, crew baggage, pack-up and fuel Max fuel = 12200 kg each extra crew-member = 92 kg + 20 kg baggage *Preliminary figures With 7 WAS cases in the rear hold, included in the BOM
Aircraft Weight (with the Configuration Shown) for Science Flights Basic Operating Mass = 29286* kg Zero Fuel Mass with crew (2 Pilots, 1 CCM) = 29443* kg Science crew of 15 (92 kg each) = 1380 kg Mission 1, Mission 2, Mission 3, VACC/WAS, CVI, PTRMS, Core Chem/WAS, Core Cloud, SWS, AVAPS, LIDAR, Flight Manager, AMS/SP2, Nephelometers, Brazilian military = 15 (only 17 max available) Zero Fuel Mass with crew (2 Pilots, 1 CCM) + Science Crew = 29443 + 1380 = 30823* kg Max T/O Mass = 42184 kg Therefore there is 11361 kg available for fuel * preliminary figures BOM includes the weight of the two heaviest WAS cases
WAS We will take all 3 sets of WAS bottles but not the ground analysis system. The main issue will be how we get the bottle cases to and from SAMBBA. The instrument configuration shown for transits has a complete set of bottle cases fitted, for science flights just two cases will be fitted at any one time. The safest scenario for the transits is to carry the other two sets as cargo on the -146. However, there will be a problem of volume and weight. We are trying to include the ability to carry extra (probably 2) WAS cases in the rear cargo hold as part of the May role change. We will then want to carry the rest of the WAS cases split between the -146 and as part of the air-freight shipment to Brazil.
Opportunities to save extra weight The aircraft will be weighed after its repainting in May. The new paint scheme will hopefully save us weight As we will strip the aircraft before painting, we will take the chance to remove redundant cabling etc Some racks can have equipment removed Manchester Cloud Rack can lose 54kg (current weight 224 kg) JIF rack can lose approx 60 kg CCN rack can lose approx 20 kg by removing FWVS We could remove seats at the detachment base (34kg per seat-pair) if we have less crew on board We could remove either the butty box (34kg) or the Banham-Hart stowage (73kg)
