Presentation transcript:

Estimating Square Roots What is a perfect square? Give some examples. A perfect square is a number that has integers as its square roots.

Common Core #2 Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to locate them on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of to the nearest tenth.

Number Line Diagram Extend it out to -10 and 10!!!!!!!!!!!!

Estimating Square Roots Without using a calculator, (1)find the two integers that the square root of any number is between (2) estimate the square root of the number to the nearest tenth (3) place the value on a number line

Estimating Square Roots 27 What two perfect squares is the square root of 27 between? Estimate the value to the nearest tenth. Place the value on the number line. 0 5 6 Estimate 27 = 5.2

Estimating Square Roots 12 What two perfect squares is the square root of 12 between? Estimate the value to the nearest tenth. Place the value on the number line. 0 3 4 Estimate 12 = 3.5

YOU TRY THIS ONE 75 = ? Answer is 8.7

BE – DONE Question Application. A square field is 1000ft². What is the perimeter in feet, to the nearest whole number, of the field? Answer is 31.6ft • 4 = 126.4 or 126 feet

Question #1 Round to the nearest tenth. 245 = ? Answer is 15.7

Question #2 Round to the nearest tenth. 33 = ? Answer is 5.7

Question #3 Round to the nearest tenth. 8 = ? Answer is 2.8

Question #4 The area of a square chessboard is 70cm². To the nearest tenth, what is the approximate length of each side of the chessboard. Answer is about 8.4
