October is Be inspired

Black History Month reminds us that remembering the past is about more than just memorising important dates and facts. It’s about recognising and understanding the amazing mix of people, events and influences that have shaped the country we live in and make us who we are.

Over the last 26 years, Black History Month has helped to inform and educate men, women and children across Britain, highlighting and celebrating the powerful contribution of African and Caribbean people in every area of British society, across centuries of our history.

Black History Month is built around the belief that people who are aware of their roots and the achievements of their ancestors can look to their future with ambition and confidence. Importantly, it is also a reaction to the fact that historians in decades past have failed to acknowledge Black historical figures.

Who were the black people in the times of Ancient Greece?

How did people refer to black people in the times of the Tudors?

The Slave Trade in the 17th century (the time of the Great Fire of London) saw an increase in the black population. Who was significant during this time?    

Mary Seacole – a black woman in Queen Victoria’s time. Who was she?

Titanic’s only black passengers. Who were they?

Do you know how many countries in the British Empire sent men to fight for Britain?  

What was significance of the Empire Windrush, three years after the end of WWII?

Your challenge for this month is to research what black history lies behind the theme you are studying. It could even be the history behind the science you are learning about.   Have a classroom display.  

But it’s not just the impact of famous, well-known African and Caribbean people on Britain’s history. It is also those ordinary people, who – in their every day lives – continue to do extraordinary things to ensure a better life for their families and their local communities.
