Basics and Development of Cardiovascular Endurance Power Point 4 Basics and Development of Cardiovascular Endurance

Your Circulatory System The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. This system is also sometimes called the cardiovascular system. The heart is the main organ of the circulatory system. The heart beats at different rates depending on whether your body is at rest or at work. There are 3 types of blood vessels: Arteries which carry blood from the heart to the major extremities. Capillaries which deliver oxygen and other nutrients to individual cells. Veins which deliver blood back to the heart.

Your Respiratory System The oxygen that your blood carries comes from the air around you. It is introduced into your body by means of your Respiratory System, which is the body system that exchanges gases between your body and the environment. The principal organ of your respiratory system is your lungs. They exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Benefits of Aerobic Activity Aerobic activity is continuous activity that requires large amounts of oxygen. Some of the benefits of aerobic activity are A lower resting heart rate More efficient breathing Cardiorespiratory endurance

Risk Factors & Lifestyle Diseases Lifestyle diseases are diseases that are the result of certain lifestyle choices. Some risk factors for heart and lung disease are inactivity, being overweight, smoking, and eating foods high in fat and cholesterol. Some examples of lifestyle diseases are: Heart Attack Stroke Hypertension Emphysema

Factors Affecting Cardiovascular Endurance The factors that affect cardiovascular endurance are age, heredity, body composition, and level of conditioning. Although several of these factors are beyond your control, anyone can sustain a relatively high level of fitness by doing the following: Start while you are young Stay active Pay attention to fitness factors you can control Make your body work for you, not against you.

Anaerobic Activities Anaerobic activities are activities that require high levels of energy and are done for only a few seconds or minutes at a high level of intensity. Anaerobic fitness is higher levels of muscular strength, muscular endurance, and physical fitness. Example of anaerobic activities include, running up two flights of stairs, sprinting 40 yards, or doing a fast break in basketball.

Types of Aerobic Activities There are a wide range of different aerobic activities. These can be done alone, in a group, at home, or at a fitness facility. Walking Jogging and Running Bicycling Aerobic Dance Kickboxing Cross-Country Skiing Water Activities

Cardiovascular Fitness Equipment There are many choices for equipment geared for cardiovascular fitness. Treadmills Stationary Bicycles Stair-Steppers Cross-Country Ski Machines Elliptical Motion Trainers Swimming Pools
