The Extended Project Qualification - EPQ What to expect at Okehampton College

What is an epq? This is an independent qualification that sits alongside your A-Levels / BTECs Students are required, with appropriate supervision, to: choose an area of interest draft a title and aims of the project for formal approval by the centre plan, research and carry out the project deliver a presentation to a non specialist audience provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment.

How is it assessed? Planning Research The finished piece of work Evaluation / Reflections and your presentation

Why should I do an EPQ? Grade UCAS points A* 28 A 24 B 20 C 16 D 12 E http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/projects/aqa-certificate/EPQ-7993/why-choose

What format should it take? We advise you that your project links with what you wish to study at university. It can take the form of a written report which should be approximately 5000 words, for example a research report of a scientific investigation, exploration of a hypothesis or an extended essay or academic report. Where the chosen product is an artefact there must also be a research based written report of approximately 1000 words. In order to appropriately evidence an artefact students may include photographs of each stage of development as well as the final product. The live presentation should be for a non-specialist audience and use media appropriate to the type of project. The presentation may involve the use of flipcharts, posters, PowerPoint or short excerpts of video material. The presentation evidence should include examples of questions from supervisors and the student’s responses to these).

Timescale We will offer EPQs to Year 12 Students so that they can be used as part of university applications. September 2017 – Initial research and title proposals. Taught element of the EPQ skills October 2017 – Title approvals and beginning of main research. Taught element of the EPQ skills December – Mid Year Reviews Easter – Submissions of projects and Presentations May – submissions of marks and coursework samples to AQA. August – receive official EPQ results We expect that you will meet with your Project Supervisor fortnightly but this will be flexible depending upon individual circumstances.
