Jenifer Davis Charlottesville City Schools TEI: Technology Enhanced Items and the Increased Rigor of the 2010 Standards Jenifer Davis Charlottesville City Schools

Today’s Objectives: To gain an understanding of the vertical changes to the English standards and the rigor of the new test To view the TEI resources available currently To have extended time to explore SOL resources To have the opportunity to ask/answer questions regarding the changes to the format

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Changed or New content: Use vocabulary from other content areas (K-6) Added extra standard in K-6 “Student will expand vocabulary” which was formerly collapsed into “read fiction and nonfiction with fluency and accuracy” in 2002 Delineation of fiction and nonfiction texts in K,1 Phonological Awareness tasks in 2nd Online resources included in standards Vocabulary switch: Synonyms and Antonyms

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Many SOL were filtered down to the grade level below: ~2.7a (Use of the knowledge of homophones) was formerly a third grade skill (3.3b) ~ 5.4b (Use knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes) now is a 4th grade standard (4.4b)

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Clear delineation of fiction and nonfiction skills whereas they were together previously in K-2 2002: K.8 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction. 2010: K.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts. K.10 The student will demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts.

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Higher order thinking questions reflect the trend with SOL released items (Bloom’s taxonomy): using last two released tests Third Grade Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Sixth Grade ** Noting Details 7 to 5 7 to 6 9 to 7 3 to 3 Drawing Conclusions 7 to 9 5 to 6 7 to 7 Characterization 2 to 3 4 to 3 2 to 1 (more of an emphasis with choice of words to denote author’s purpose) 5 to 3

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Increase in passing percentages for pass proficient (400-499) and pass advanced scores.

2010 Reading Standards versus 2002 Reading Standards: Incorporation of poetry again into test (last 2004)

2010 Rigor of the Standard of Learning Test: Total Number of questions presented (2001-2008-2012) 3rd 4th 5th 6th Total Number of Questions Scored (25-35-40) * 7 field test items (na-35-40) (42~research-40-40) * 10 field test items (na-45-45)

2010 Rigor of Standard of Learning Test: Shift in blueprint construction

2010 Rigor of the Standard of Learning Test: Question stems-more application of skills Example: 4th - 2007 test: “To find the meaning of the word ‘puzzled’, a student should look in-” 4th - 2011: “Read this thesaurus entry. Which meaning of support is used in paragraph 4?”

2010 Rigor of the Standard of Learning Test: 5 passages- 2 Fiction, 2 Non-fiction, 1 will be poetry and 1 most likely functional text

2010 Rigor of the Standard of Learning Test: TEI items no longer field testing but fully operational items 2011-2012: TEI Items were only used as field test items to gather data 2012-2013: TEI fully operational, 15% of test blueprint questions
