Weaver, PhD, MD*, Adam Flowers, MD*, Ben Collins** and Cindy Passmore, MA† *McLennan County Medical Education and Research Foundation, Family Practice Residency Program, Waco, Texas; **Baylor University, Waco, Texas; †Faculty Development Center, Waco, TX BACKGROUND METHODS Maternal obesity data Obesity is a significant cause of increased morbidity and health care costs in the U.S. Prevalence in both children and adults is increasing in the U.S. Children with BMI >95th%tile are considered overweight and those with BMI >85th%tile are considered at risk for overweight. Parental obesity and low SES are risk factors for childhood obesity and future adult obesity. *Electronic chart review of 2 months of pediatric clinic visits 2500 charts *Calculated BMI percentile for every child. *Randomly selected 100 charts for analysis of mother’s BMI. Over 80% of mothers were overweight or obese. The most overweight children tended to have the most obese mothers. RESULTS Over 51% of children were overweight or at risk for overweight. CONCLUSIONS PURPOSE There is a high incidence of overweight children in our population. Ethnicity is closely related to risk of obesity. Most mothers of overweight children are themselves obese. To determine the incidence of overweight and at risk for overweight children ages 2-18 at a community health center. A secondary aim is to analyze the percentage of the mothers of these overweight children who are also overweight or obese. Percent of children overweight or at risk for being overweight did not differ by gender. The median age of overweight children was 1.5 years older than the median age for all children.
