1. What is anguish?

A. Anguish is a God given EMOTION Anguish comes from Latin word, “angere” = "to choke, squeeze, strangle."

B. Anguish can be VALUABLE Romans 8:18 - Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.

i. Anguish clarifies what the heart truly worships Do you worship deliverance or the Deliverer?   ii. Anguish purifies the heart Do you only see the temporal heartache or the eternal victory? iii. Anguish motivates the heart to action Does your anguish cause you to act?

2. Was Jesus ever in anguish?

Luke 22-39-44 39 Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives. 40 There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.” 41 He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. 44 He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

C. SEEK GOD 41 He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 

James 4:6 - God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Philippians 4:6 - Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need…

3. What happens when we handle anguish appropriately?

I will rescue and honor them. 16 I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. B. STRENGTH 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. Isaiah 40:29 God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
