Measuring the Temple “Was Given” Measuring Rod Chapter 11:1,2: Measuring the Temple “Was Given” Measuring Rod Told to measure the Temple, Altar, and worshippers “Was Given” Divine Passive!!! Measuring Rod Small straight lightweight reed 10ft 4in Measuring the Temple, Altar, and worshippers Compare to Ezekiel 40-43 – God’s ownership and protection of His people What is the temple, altar, and worshippers: Temple to be rebuilt? Physically? NT Temple = Not a building! Temple – place of God’s dwelling History – Garden of Eden, God and Man in fellowship; After fall – tabernacle and temple used to recapture Eden experience; NT – Jesus fulfills sacrificial system, veil is torn, Spirit indwelling 1 Cor. 3:16, 6:19; Eph. 2:20-22; I Peter 2:4-10 Altar combined with Temple – referring to inner court (See slide with pic) Altar – same as the one in 8:3, 6:9 Sacrifices of the martyrs Possible Interpretations of the Measuring: Rebuilding or restoring the church Possible, but does not seem to fit the overall context Destruction of apostates No emphasis of judgment by God here – from Gentiles Preserving the people of God from physical harm Problem – v.2 physical harm allowed Preserving the saints from spiritual harm Most likely – spiritual protection in coming tribulation Saints are the temple in NT Physical harm does happen – 6:9-11; 13:7 – from the beast

Measuring the Temple Do not measure outer court Chapter 11:1,2: Measuring the Temple Do not measure outer court Given over to the nations 42 months – 3.5 years – Time of Tribulation Outer court not measured Court of the Gentiles Exclude = has violent connotation – drive out, exclude Referring to the tribulation period of suffering/martyred Given over to the Nations Work of the Beast = Antichrist Martyrs – persecution This prophecy = eating of little scroll 42 months One of three ways of saying same time frame Only 3/5 years mentioned in Rev. – No 7 year period 1260 days, time, times, half a time Dan.7:25, Dan. 9:27; 12:7 Daniel doesn’t use 42 months – refers to other OT themes Drought in time of Elijah – 1 Kings 17 Wilderness wanderings – 42 encampments Num. 33:5-49 Symbolize time of tribulation Dan. 7:25 – handed over to the beast – Antichrist to have triumph Is this a literal time period? NEXT WEEK!

“The measuring of God’s people that we see in 11:1 is a symbolic depiction of God’s knowing exactly where all his people are. He is taking stock of them, so he can protect them all. None of God’s people are overlooked. None of God’s people will be forgotten. Do you believe that? Ask the Lord right now to assure you that He knows you by name, that he will protect you. He has stretched the measuring line over you. You belong to Him.” James Hamilton Jr., Revelation: The Spirit Speaks to the Churches

Praise the One who protects the spiritual over the physical! Takeaway Thought. Matthew 10:28 – “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
