Chapter 9

City Driving Why is city driving more difficult? There are more hazards more often How many seconds should you keep as a space cushion when following a vehicle in front of you, under normal conditions? 3 - Increase this distance under adverse conditions

Why should you look through, over, and around a vehicle in front of you? To anticipate potential situations What is "tail-gating" (not the sports kind) A driver following to closely behind you

If someone is tail-gating, what should you do? Increase your following distance so that if you must stop you can do so slowly/move slightly to the right so the following car can see better/signal early/in extreme situations, change lanes

What is a stale green light? A traffic light that is about to change yellow (usually expect it to change soon if it's green when you first see it) What is "covering the brake"? Holding your foot over the brake in preparation to stop

What is "riding the brake"? Resting your foot on the break (makes driver following you think younger about to stop - also wears your brakes down faster What is the "basic speed law"? You may not drive faster than is safe for the conditions

What lane do you turn from when turning right onto a one-way street? Right lane What lane do you turn from when turning left onto a one-way street? Left lane

Which lane should you use when turning left from a one-way road? Farthest left-remember to turn into the first available left lane What should you do if you encounter a vehicle headed the wrong way on a one-way street? Slow/steer right/honk

When is it illegal to pass on a two-lane two-way street? At intersections & over double yellow lines
