Integrating Technology in to the Curriculum BY: HANNA DAILEY HANNA.DAILEY@SMAIL.ASTATE.EDU

What Does “Integrating Technology In To The Curriculum” Mean? Modern society means expansion of technology Technology is becoming a prevalent educational tool 97 percent of teachers had one or more computers in the classroom (2009-National Center for Educational Statistics) 54 percent could bring computers into the classroom. Teachers must know how to properly integrate/bring in technology in to the classroom How to use technology so it is an enhancer, not a replacement

Why? What Is Happening With Technology? Development of, IPad, Interactive White Boards, and implementation of New Tech programs means more technology in schools than ever If teachers don’t have experience with the technology it could be very bad for the classroom

IPad Libraries “percentage of students who rated either proficient or advanced (the 'passing' rate) was 49% percent higher in the 'flipped classrooms' using the iPads than in the traditional classrooms with no iPads”

Interactive Whiteboards Interactive Whiteboards or Promethean boards have become an incredible trend and tool in classrooms across the nation Costly-but serve a multitude of purposes Showing movies Working on lessons as a class Interactive software

New Tech Program New Tech is a unique and interactive initiative many school around the nation are taking on Involves studying a particular subject for a certain amount of time then conducting projects to further study the subject Mostly online Most projects involve different forms of technology Many of these schools have engaged in apple initiative and have given students laptops to use during their schooling “New Tech Network is a nonprofit organization that transforms schools into innovative learning environments. Our project-based learning approach engages students with dynamic, rigorous curriculum. Through extensive professional development and hands-on coaching, our teachers evolve from keepers of knowledge to facilitators of rich, relevant learning” (newtechnetwork.org)

Statistics of technology use in classrooms “Students using iPads saw their math test scores increase 20% in one year compared to students using traditional textbooks” (securedgenetworks.com) "The Big 3" publishers: McGraw-Hill (MHP), Pearson (PSO) and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which together provide 90% of the textbooks available to schools, are all currently partnering with Apple to sell digital versions” (Pearsoned.com) 2.8 million SmartBoards have been installed in installed in K–12 classrooms (smarttech.com) Means almost 70million students are learning via Smart Board (Smarttech.com) “Over 65,000 digital resources are available on the SMART Exchange™ website” (smarttech.com

What about differentiated learning? “IPads in the classroom have led to increased engagement among disabled students and have accelerated and improved their learning and comprehension” (securedgenetworks.com) “Assistive technology in the classroom allows disabled students to build on their strengths and address their challenges” (education.cu) Technology used in disability interventions include: Speech conversion devices Speech recognition devices Devices such as Ipads with easy to adjust text sizes Portable or sound detecting keyboards Interactive software

How Can This Benefit The Classroom? Technology has a multitude of benefits inside and outside the classroom on a child’s education Inside the classroom: Interactive way for students to learn Helps with kinesthetic and attention deficit learners that might be neglected just learning from the textbooks All around great way to enhance a traditional lesson Outside the classroom: With Apple Initiatives students can work with technology at home Any students with access to smart devices an most likely access the technology Parents can see and use the software that can be accessed at home

Examples Of How To Execute This In The Classroom Key factor is to use technology as an enhancement, not a replacement Technology should not take the place of textbooks or traditional methods of learning-just used to enhance or make a lesson more interactive IPads: If an IPad library is available, students can each take (or share) an IPad to work on an app that drills their ability to use the different parts of speech Smart Boards: No matter the type of Smart Board a class has, software can be downloaded then worked on as a class to practice a particular skill New Tech Program: This program can serve a lot of good if utilized in the right way Students must understand the material before entering in to the project phase, and then have a project that is relevant to the material being studied.

IPads Subject: English Application: Grammaropolis Price: Free Activity: After working on the parts of speech in class, students can play on this app to work on applying the new skills they have learned. There are multiple levels and different characters that act similar to the parts of speech they are portraying. This is a great form of drill and practice for students

Smart Board Subject: Math Software: Promethean-Place Value Resources flipchart Price: Free Activity: As students practice place value this activity can be downloaded on the promethean. Students can work in teams or the class can participate as a whole. Once the activity is downloaded it can be pulled up on the promethean and students can come up to complete the problems on the board or the teacher can click through it on their computer.

New Tech Subject: History Project: We Didn’t Start the Fire Upon studying many of the cold war events and the general timeline from 1950s-1980s, students can use their laptops to study the Billy Joel classic, “We Didn’t Start the Fire”. This song covers many historical events and students can work in teams to see how many of the events they can figure out and put tentative dates for. This can be a fun “pre lesson” game to see how much they already know, or can be used after the lesson to see how much they retained.

Integration of Technology It is obvious technology is a progressive tool that will only grow more prevalent Teachers and schools need to know how to use it properly Enhancement not replacement Many different ways to utilize it in the classroom that cost next to nothing These students are our future, and technology will only continue to progress in the future, make sure the two and coenside.
