Changes in Maths in the 2014 Curriculum The government has published a new primary maths curriculum (2014) for Key Stages 1 and 2 There's more to learn - quite a few topics that used to be in secondary maths have been moved forward - such as long division and a more complex understanding of fractions Fractions are introduced earlier, multiplication tables up to 12x are expected by age 9 (End of Year 4) There is an increased emphasis on practice. "So pupils develop the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately." Calculators are out!  - to be replaced by "mental fluency and the use of efficient written methods in the four mathematical operations“ Deepening learning to achieve Mastery in mathematical topics instead of progressing to the year above’s targets

Calveley’s Maths Calculation Policy In order to achieve the maths objectives, we have written a calculation policy which is followed by all teachers in all year groups Policy has been updated so that it is inline with the maths curriculum (2014) Outlines Year Group specific calculations for the four operations Located on the school website for parents to use and is accompanied by calculation video examples

Our Target Cards This year we have introduced Target Cards into our maths policy. These enable us to track the children, identify the areas of maths they are able to complete independently, and the areas of maths they need more work on.

Mastery in primary maths Mastery of maths means a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. Increased understanding of the principles underpinning the mathematical processes being learnt This greater degree of mathematical fluency will enable pupils to be more adept in tackling problem solving and reasoning tasks Mastery Aims to develop: Fluency (rapid and accurate recall and application of facts and concepts) A growing confidence to reason mathematically The ability to apply maths to solve problems, to conjecture and to test hypotheses. Mastery of maths, which should build gradually as a child goes through school, is a tool for life, and immeasurably more valuable than the short term ability to answer questions in tests or exams.

Mastery at Calveley We are aiming for all children to be at mastery level by the end of the year. This means they have a deep understanding of all mathematical concepts There are three different elements to be working at Mastery Level – Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving

Mastery with Greater Depth If a child has reached mastery, they work to be Mastery with Greater Depth. This means having a deeper understanding of the mathematical concept they are working with (not working to the year above). Children who are working at Mastery with Greater Depth are able to apply their knowledge across the maths curriculum, reason and problem solve at a deeper level.

Addition KS2 Addition

Year 5 - Addition Use column addition to add two or three whole numbers with up to 5 digits. Use column addition to add any pair of two-place decimal numbers including amounts of money. Revert to expanded methods if the children experience any difficulty. Extend to up to two places of decimals (same number of decimals places) and adding several numbers (with different numbers of digits).

Subtraction KS2 Subtraction

Year 4 - Subtraction Use expanded column subtraction for 3-digit and 4-digit numbers

Multiplication KS2 Multiplication Extended Method

Year 3 - Multiplication https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcwxPgKNwjI Use partitioning (column multiplication) to multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by single digit numbers

Division KS2 Division Short form division / Bus Stop Method Extended / Additive Chunking Method

Year 6 - Division Extended Additional Chunking. Use additive chunking division method to divide a number with up to 4 digits by a number less than 12. Use these coins to help with their calculations (HTU ÷ U and ThHTU ÷ U) using the ‘Additive Chunking’ method (division with remainders to be expressed as r, fractions and decimals). Bus Stop Method Use short division method to divide a 2-digit or 3-digit number by a single-digit number and express remainders as (r) and introduce remainders as fractions

Resources at home Mymaths – Our homework website (www.mymaths.co.uk) Nrich – these are mathematical challenges that support Mastery and Mastery with greater depth (http://nrich.maths.org/) Topmarks – lots of different games and interactive tasks to complete (http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games) BBCbitesize – tests, tasks and notes on the KS2 curriculum (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/) Hit the button – a great timestables game (http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button) King of Maths – A free app that consolidates number bonds and other calculations

How can you help at home? Help the children to complete their “mymaths” homework. Encourage children to practise their times tables – by counting up in steps of multiples and quick-fire testing. Access the Maths tutorial videos to support children with consolidation of different calculations.
