Topic 2 Generalize and Analyze Patterns

Lesson 2-1 Repeating Pattern Target Goal: You will be able to identify and extend repeating geometric or repeating number patterns. Important Words to Know: Repeating Pattern

Repeating Pattern

How can you continue a repeating pattern? Warm-Up: This is the beginning of a pattern. How can you continue this pattern? What do you predict will be the 10th shape in the pattern? Extension: Look at the pattern above. If you show the pattern repeat 3 times, how many triangles would you show in all?

Guided Practice

Practice Review Continue the patterns:

Writing to Explain: Answer:

Extending the Skill

Lesson 2-2 Important Words to Know: Target Goal: You will be able to identify and extend whole number patterns involving addition and subtraction. Important Words to Know:

What is the pattern? 17, 19, 21, 23, _____, _____ Warm-Up: 18, 21, 24, 27, _____, _____ 17, 19, 21, 23, _____, _____ 40, 36, 32, 28, _____, _____ Extension: Create two number patterns that use the same rule but start with a different number.

Guided Practice

Practice Review Find a rule for the pattern. Use your rule to continue each pattern. Use the rule to create the pattern.

Think Time: Which numbers would be in the pattern on the left? 45, 54, 63, 71, 84 Do you notice another pattern that helps you figure out what numbers will be in this pattern? What are other numbers that Mia could have named that are not in the answer that you selected?

Extending the Skill Mike the Magician has a magic hat that will double any amount of money placed into it and add $5.00 to the doubled amount. Yesterday, he placed a certain amount of money in his hat, got a new amount, then placed the new amount back in his hat. After doing this, he had $51.00. How much money did he first place in his hat? Subtract $5.00 from $51.00. (46) Divide this by 2. (23) Subtract 5 (18) Divide by 2 (9)

Lesson 2-3 Target Goal: You will extend tables of ordered pairs for situations involving multiplication, addition, or subtraction. Important Terms to Know:

What pairs of numbers fit a pattern? Warm-Up: There are 3 juice boxes in 1 pack, 6 in 2 packs, and 9 in 3 packs. How many juice boxes in 5 packs? What other pairs of numbers fit this pattern? Work with a partner to complete the table. Number of Packs Number of Juice Boxes 1 3 2 6 9 4 5 10 100 Extension: Make your own table that follows a rule.

Guided Practice

Practice Review Complete the tables. How long would the side of the 8th square be?

Writing to Explain: Answer:

Extending the Skill How can using a table help you figure this problem out?

Lesson 2-4 Target Goal: When given a table of number pairs, you will be able to find a rule and extend the table. Important Terms to Know:

What is a math rule for the situation? Warm-Up: What are the rules for the following tables?

Extension: Look back at the first table that you made Extension: Look back at the first table that you made. Write a word problem to match one of the pairs of numbers in the table.

Guided Practice

Practice Review Find a rule for the table. Use the rule to complete the table.

Extending the Skill Look at the cross pattern above. Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Look at the cross pattern above. Use this picture to help you fill in the table on the right. How many squares will level 10 have? Use what you know about growing patterns to explain why Your answer is correct.

Lesson 2-5 Target Goal: You will extend patterns of cubes or tiles. Important Terms to Know:

How can you describe block towers? Warm-Up: Look at the towers of cubes. Do you see a pattern in the number of cubes in each tower? What would the next two towers look like? Extension: Suppose a student wrote 11 and 15 as a pair of numbers for the table above. What error did this student make? Number of Stories 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 100 Number of Cubes

Guided Practice

Practice Review Use patterns to find the missing numbers in each table.

How can drawing a table help you figure out this problem? Draw the table below:

Extending the Skill Beth had a group of friends over to watch a movie. She passed a bowl of peanuts around to her 11 friends. Counting Beth, there were 12 people who ate the peanuts. Beth took 1 peanut, her 1rst friend took 3 peanuts, her 2nd friend took 5 peanuts, and so on, until the 12th person took peanuts and the bowl was empty How many peanuts were in the bowl at the beginning of the evening? Create a table to help you figure out the answer to this problem.

Lesson 2-6 Target Goal: After looking at a table of number pairs, you will be able to find the rule and extend the table. Important Terms to Know:

How can you solve problems by acting them out and using reasoning? Warm-Up: Nolan has collected 14 baseball cards, including cards from the Rangers, the Astros, and the Titans. He has 3 Astros cards. He has 5 fewer Titans cards than Rangers cards. How many of each kind of card is in Nolan’s collection? Extension: Can you create your own problem that can be acted out with two color counters?

Guided Practice

Practice Review Ask, “What do I know? Use objects to show what you Use reasoning to make conclusions.
