Title Factors associated with viral suppression among adolescents living with HIV in Cambodia “No conflicts of interest to declare”

Background Compared to their adult counterparts, adolescents living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART): Have poorer rates of treatment adherence Poorer rates of viral suppression Higher mortality rates. This study investigated factors associated with viral suppression among adolescents living with HIV in Cambodia.

Methods Cross sectional study in August 2016 Adolescents living with HIV: 15- 17 years old 328 respondents (32%- adult ART clinics) 11 ART clinics 10 provinces/municipality Viral suppression definition: <1,000 copies/ml

Results Variables in the final model Viral suppression AOR (95% CI) P-value Longer duration on ART 0.98 (0.97-0.99) 0.01 Higher most recent CD4 count 0.96 (0.96-0.99) 0.002 Being aware that they were receiving ART   No Reference Yes 0.38 (0.07-0.68) <0.001 Receiving care and treatment from Pediatric clinic Adult clinic 2.87 (1.28-6.44) Knowing that HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex with people living with HIV 0.53 (0.12-0.92) 0.04 Understanding that there is no cure for AIDS 0.42 (0.19-0.92) 0.03

Conclusions Viral load suppression rates: considerably high, but lower than global target of 90% Associated factors include: Longer duration on ART Higher most recent CD4 count Being aware that they were receiving ART Knowledge about HIV and ART Areas for program improvement: Treatment literacy Understanding of HIV to prepare for transition from pediatric to adult HIV care
