Land grabs: a growing scandal

KEY QUESTIONS What is a ‘land grab’? Why are land grabs making more people hungry? What can we do to help?

AN INTRODUCTION TO LAND GRABS Watch this film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6zPzo_xyEg How would you feel if you were the farmers in the video?

HOME is where the bulldozers are

WHY IS LAND SO IMPORTANT?

WHY IS LAND SO IMPORTANT?

WHAT IS A LAND GRAB? A land grab includes one or more of the following: 1. Violates human rights 2. Lack of informed consent 3. Ignores impacts 4. Avoids transparent contracts 5. Doesn’t give everyone a say

Why now?

WHERE DO LAND DEALS HAPPEN? Foreign investors are buying an area the size of London in developing countries every 6 days. In Cambodia, NGOs estimate that between 56 and 63 per cent of all arable land in the country has been handed out to private companies. 70% of the land area reported to be acquired for agriculture by foreign investors is concentrated in just 11 countries, 7 of which are in Africa. More than 30 per cent of the land in Liberia has been handed out in large-scale concessions in the past five years, often with disastrous results for local people.

WHAT IMPACTS DO THEY HAVE? Confusion and uncertainty Some violent evictions Loss of assets Loss of livelihoods and opportunities Divided communities

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE AND HOW CAN YOU HELP? Investors, governments and international organisations (such as the World Bank) need to put a stop to land grabs. Oxfam is calling for the World Bank to stop its investments in land deals for six months. Host your own ‘land grab’ to make the issue visible, get people thinking and make it necessary for those with power to change.
