Automation © Global Air Training Limited 2010

General design considerations and implications of automation -Initially thought quick 20m chat about auto-pilots, couple of pictures and finish but then became much wider. My own views, not from any text book or research paper. -paradox in terms? -where does technology stop and CRM & Automation begin? -examples: kettle, mobile phone -No system perfect. Constant evolution. System optimised for one point in sky © Global Air Training Limited 2010

Variations Operation & Purpose Powered by Routes & Range Size & Configuration © Global Air Training Limited 2010

Operational Variations Routes / Range International and domestic routes Long, mid and short haul Fully equipped airports, tarmac/grass airstrips, helipads Airports with radar and excellent nav aids, Airports with no Nav facilities Single or Multi-crew Cabin crew or no cabin crew Wide or narrow bodied Single or multi deck Short or long cabin length © Global Air Training Limited 2010

Mixed Fleet BAe ATP Boeing B747 Chinook WHITEBOARD -B747 vs A320 vs EMB 120 -Q Big vs Small -Q Old vs New -Q Long haul role vs short haul role -Q US vs European vs South American = CULTURE -Q manufacturing philosophy vs suppliers -Q Highly automated vs basic aircraft -Q International airfield vs bush strip - Fleet SOPs? - Same problems? - Same equipment for a fleet wide buy? - Where do you spend the money? Do you need to? WIPE © Global Air Training Limited 2010 BN Islander Airbus A320
