A Tale of the Cats by J.A.H. Hunter The lucky cats in Stratton Street Had seven mice apiece to eat. The rest made do With only two: The total score Being twenty-four. How many cats ate mousie meat?

What is Algebra? Algebra is a branch of mathematics that studies the relationships between quantities that vary. These relationships can be represented verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically. Emphasis on functions and their applications as mathematical models

A Tale of the Cats Symbolically: Graphically: Numerically:

What is Geometry? Geometry is a branch of mathematics that studies spatial relationships (size, shape, relative position, properties of space). Emphasis on spatial reasoning, proof, properties of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures

A Tale of the Cats A cat on a 25-ft tall rooftop of a house on Stratton Street spies a mouse at a 55° angle of depression. How far away is the mouse? Marcio Melo. Cat on the Roof in the Moonlight, 2001.

What is Discrete Mathematics? Discrete Mathematics is a branch of mathematics that studies discrete (as opposed to continuous) objects. Emphasis on problem-solving, logic, proof, combinatorics and probability, vertex-edge graphs

A Tale of the Cats A clever cat has mapped out 8 mouse holes on Stratton Street. Can he check all 8 mouse holes without checking any hole twice? Cathy Breedyk Law. City Cat, 2008.
