Tides Objectives: Describe the arrangement of the sun, moon, and earth during spring and neap tides. Provide evidence that supports the claim that the moon’s effect on tides is greater than the sun. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: Where are the locations of the sun, moon, and earth during a spring and neap tide?

What is happening in the above images?

What causes Tides? Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the Sun and Moon’s gravity acting on the oceans. There are 2 kinds of special tides: Spring Tide Neap tide

What Causes Tides? The Sun and the Moon both influence tides because of their gravity. However, the Moon has TWICE the gravitational pull on our oceans. .

Tides Follow the Law! The Law of Universal Gravitation states: The greater an object’s mass, the greater its gravity (and vice versa) The greater the distance between two objects, the weaker the gravity is. (and vice versa)

Why is the Moon the main cause of tides and not the Sun? A. The moon orbits around the earth. B. The Moon is much closer than the Sun, so its gravitation pull is greater. C. The Sun doesn’t have any effect on our tides.

Spring Tides: When the gravity of the Moon and the Sun combine (FULL AND NEW MOON) in order to increase water levels. GREATER difference between high/low tides. LOW TIDE HIGH TIDE EARTH THE MOON HIGH TIDE LOW TIDE

Spring Tides Means to leap up. Create the greatest difference between the low and high tide.

Neap Tides: When the gravity of the Moon and the Sun are at 90°angles (FIRST AND THIRD QUARTER) and work against each other. SMALLER difference between high/low tides. THE MOON HIGH TIDE LOW TIDE EARTH LOW TIDE HIGH TIDE

Neap Tides Create the smallest difference between the low and high tide.

Check for understanding: Allyse’s family lives near the beach. Every day there is a high tide and a low tide. Allyse notices that sometimes the high tides are higher and the low tides are lower than they are at other times. She realizes that this happens in a predictable pattern. What causes the highest of high tides and the lowest of low tides to occur?

How to interpret Tide Data? Tidal Range is the difference between the levels of the ocean water at high tide and low tide. Spring tides have the largest daily tidal range while neap tides have the smallest daily tidal range.

How to interpret Tide Data? Because the earth rotates at a faster pace than the moon’s revolution around the earth, tides occur at different times around the earth. There are usually 2 high tides and 2 low tides that occur daily.

Height high tide low tide Dates

Solar and Lunar Eclipse Objective: Describe and illustrate the arrangement of the sun, moon, and earth during both solar and lunar eclipses. Essential Question: How are the Sun, moon, and earth arranged during a solar and lunar eclipse?

Solar and Lunar Eclipses

Eclipses are named after the object that is blocked out. What are Eclipses? An eclipse occurs when one object casts a shadow on another object that is in space. Eclipses are named after the object that is blocked out.
