The Guilt Offering Leviticus 5:14-6:7; 7:1-7

The Relationship Between the Testaments Hebrews 10:12 “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins” Romans 5:14 “Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.”

A Comparison of the Offerings The burnt offering: wrath 2 Samuel 24:25 “And David built there an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD responded to the plea for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel.”

A Comparison of the Offerings The grain offering: tribute Deut 26:10 “‘And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me.’ And you shall set it down and worship before the LORD your God.” The sin offering: cleansing Leviticus 16:9 “And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it…”

The Purpose of the Guilt Offering Restitution Restitution when you’ve misused God’s property (14-16) When you are aware of what you’ve done Eaten holy food Took dedicated tithes Failed to fulfill a dedicatory vow Pay a tithe

The Purpose of the Guilt Offering Bring what you owe plus 20%, and pay for the offering Restitution when you don’t know what you’ve done wrong (17-19) Know that something isn’t right Prompting of the Holy Spirit Pangs of conscience Still offer the ram, which is a costly sacrifice, but without restitution/reparation

The Purpose of the Guilt Offering Restitution when you’ve wronged both God and man You commit a sin that would normally be covered by civil law Steal something But in this case you swear by God that you didn’t! Make God an accomplice to sin Repay + 20%, bring offering

The Procedure for the Guilt Offering Everyone brings a ram Restitution is given to either the priest or the offended party, plus 20 percent Animal is killed Blood sprinkled on the sides of altar The fat ant the kidneys are offered The rest is given to the priests

The Meaning for us Today Jesus Christ is our guilt offering John 19:6 “When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, ‘Crucify him, crucify him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.’” Acts 13:28 “And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.”

The Meaning for us Today Colossians 2:13 “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses...” Stealing is still wrong! Eph 4:28 “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share…”

The Meaning for us Today If we’ve wronged someone else, we need to do everything in our power to make it right if we expect God’s acceptance and forgiveness in our daily lives Matt 5:23-24 “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

The Meaning for us Today God holds us accountable for how we use what is dedicated to Him to him Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11) We can bring our guilt feelings to God John 16:8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…”

The Meaning for us Today Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
