ESPRIT Easily diStributed Personal RapId Transit This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 653395. ESPRIT Easily diStributed Personal RapId Transit Project Presentation Valéry Cervantes Project Coordinator

01 02 03 04 AGENDA Project rationale and vision Strategic objectives and expected results 03 Preliminary Results : sway control law 04 Work structure and partnership

 Increase the use rate of cars How to share cars Carpooling  Fill the cars Carsharing  Increase the use rate of cars Transported passengers Efficient for long distance. Not working for commuting to work A solution for short distances? A solution for commuting to work?

One way car sharing : the service meeting the demand Conventional car sharing

One way : unsolved problems System gets unbalanced Poor reliability => empty stations, saturated station => difficulties to have a car, difficulties to park improvable service quality If electric, more than 2 stations / vehicle! => investments!

Trackless , compact, stackable and mechanically coupled Redistribution by an operator Redistribution of fleet : By an operator (road train) By a user (2 vehicles) Parking compactness x 4 1 charging station per train Battery balancing between vehicles Redistribution by a user

Kanban type redistribution OPERATION Back office redistribution station A system oriented to the user: direct and fast to the destination, available (no need to wait) => service quality Redistribution workforce need is aligned with demand (especially during off-peak hour period) => cheap to operate

ESPRIT : 2 ways of using One way carsharing in city center Suburban : connecting to the Public Transport Hubs For cities > 500 000 inhab. For dense suburban areas.

Technical challenges Vehicular side : Solve technical challenges Drive, brake and steer without : Sway risks / oscillation risks Jackknifing risks Guide and couple the vehicles Charging / Balancing strategy of the energy storage Development of the physical architecture, chassis , body Weight challenge Homologation challenges (2 vehicles in one homologation, road train)

01 02 03 04 AGENDA Project rationale and vision Strategic objectives and expected results 03 Preliminary Results : sway control law 04 Work structure and partnership

Objectives of the Project Vehicular side : Define and develop the functionalities up to TRL5 Secure the functional safety Develop the ESPRIT System, 3 complete vehicles + 3 chassis Reach the weight objective Secure their ability to be homologated

Objectives of the Project Operational and Mobility side : Estimate if the system is socially and economically relevant on 3 use cases (L’Hospitalet, Lyon, Glasgow) : Estimate the economic sustainability Social benefits/ drawbacks, induced modal share for public transport. Estimate the potential market

01 02 03 04 AGENDA Project rationale and vision Strategic objectives and expected results 03 Preliminary Results : sway control law 04 Work structure and partnership

The nesting / trackless principle Articulation

The actuators A damper at the articulation level Powering of the rear wheels Steering of the front wheels

The test scenario for roadtrain stability Elk Test’ according to ISO 3888 Road trains of 2 vehicles : 65 Km/h Road trains > 2 vehicles : 45 Km/H

Mains results Latreral deviation Distance Results obtained according to a bicycle model. The most demanding scenario concerns a 8 vehicle roadtrain Preliminary results indicate that stability coulb be achieved.
