Editing -part1(trimming)-

Trimming In adobe Premiere you can trim a portion of your clip or clips in different ways. Some of the common methods are explained in the following slides.

Trimming using select tool Put your cursor at the beginning or end of where you want to trim. When it becomes red, you can drag the clip to the desired trimmed spot. You can drag your clip over into the gap. Make sure they “snap” together. If it does not snap together, press “s” key.

Trimming using edit and ripple tool As illustrated in the tool panel earlier, you can use the ripple edit toll and rolling tool to trim a portion of your clip or clips in the timeline. (for more information about the ripple and rolling tool see the tool panel lectures).

Trimming using trim window The trim monitor looks similar to the source and program monitors — the difference is that it includes a specialized set of controls to fine-tune the edit between two shots. It doesn't actually do anything that can't be done with the timeline, source and program monitors, but it can make this type of adjustment easier.

Trimming using trim window In the trim window, the left image view shows the last frame of the first (outgoing) clip and the right view shows the first frame of the second (incoming) clip. The controls allow you to add or remove frames from each clip and preview the transition. To open the trim panel, move the playhead to the edit point in the timeline and use one of these options: -Click the trim button below the program monitor (pictured in the next slide right) -Click the panel menu button on the program monitor, then select Trim -Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-T

Trim window Hold your mouse over one of the image views. The cursor will change to the trim-in or trim-out icon. Click the view to make it active — a cyan bar will appear above and below the image. Drag left and right to add/remove frames in a ripple edit. If you click and drag in the middle of the two monitors the cursor changes to a rolling edit icon and both monitors become active. Drag to perform a rolling edit.

Trim window Timecode Displays There are five timecode displays below the image views. The outer displays (in black) show the duration of each clip. The centre three displays (in blue) can be dragged to perform edits. The left display adjusts the outpoint of the first clip, the right display adjusts the in- point of the second clip (both as a ripple edit). The centre display adjusts both points in a rolling edit.

Trim window Set the Large Trim Offset in Preferences Want more trim offset?  Premiere Pro allows you to change the Large Trim amount (the default is 5) On a Mac go to Premiere Pro > Preferences > Trim.  On a PC its Edit > Preferences > Trim PC.  Change the Large Trim Offset to 10 frames.  After changing the Offset, you will see the new values in Trim Mode (see example below).

Trimming with Keyboard Shortcuts Using shortcuts are the fastest way to trim in Premiere Pro.  You can trim 1 frame to left with the shortcut Option + Left Arrow (on Mac) or Alt + Left Arrow (on PC).  Similarly, trim 1 frame to the right with the shortcut Option + Right Arrow (on Mac) or Alt + Right Arrow (on PC). The shortcuts for trimming with the large trim offset are Option + Shift + Left Arrow or  Option + Shift+ Right Arrow (Substitute Option for Alt on PC).

Trimming with Keyboard Shortcuts You can also modify the Premiere Pro keyboard shortcuts to add ones you like.  Check out the complete list of default Premiere Pro shortcuts
