Vocabulary Interactive Practices Directions 7th and 8th grade

How to Effectively Acquire New Vocabulary Step 1: Physically look up the vocabulary word in a print dictionary or online dictionary. Mentally “take-in” the visual of the vocabulary word and then “take-in” the definition. Step 2: Fill out your vocabulary note card with the word on the front of the card and the definition, part of speech, and a sample sentence that uses the word along with a context clue to help you understand the word, on the back of the card. Step 3: Vocabulary Art work: Provide an illustration or scenario scene of your vocabulary word. This could include a simple depiction or a detailed image of the vocabulary word. Be sure that the meaning of the vocabulary word can be inferred by simply looking at your picture or scenario. Step 4: Vocabulary Activities: Complete Vocabulary Research Practices to more deeply understand your new vocabulary words.

Adding Newly Acquired Vocabulary to your daily lexicon… To fully learn and add newly acquired vocabulary to your everyday speech, you should do the following: 1. Listen for the vocabulary word on the news, in books, and from your teachers and other adults. Notice how and when the word is used. 2. Deliberately use the vocabulary word in your daily conversations with others. 3. Replace basic and simple words, that you already overuse, with higher level vocabulary words discussed in class.

Vocabulary Log Keep the following log of your vocabulary words: Where did you hear it?___________ Who said it?_____________ What was the context?___________
