Lines Line-the path of a dot through space Lines are used to create movement In art lines are used to make the viewer move into, around, and out of visual images in a work of art

5 main types of line Vertical=move straight up and down (Used to show dignity, formality, and strength) Horizontal=move side to side, run parallel to the ground (Used to show peace, rest, and quiet) Diagonal=slant, lean, in between a vertical and horizontal line (Used to show movement, excitement, tension, and firmness) Curved=bend, change direction little by little (Used to show movement, graceful, and flowing) Zigzag=made from combining different directions of diagonal lines, go back and forth (Used to show confusion, action, nervous excitement)

Other important lines Outlines=lines that made by the edge of an object Contour lines=lines that describe the shape of an object and the main detail inside Implied lines=lines that are not drawn but created by the surrounding lines or space

Line Quality Line quality=unique character of any line (Examples=smooth, rough, broken, sketchy, etc) Line quality is affected by the tool or medium (paint brush vs. pencil, paint vs. chalk) Line Variation=thickness or thinness, lightness or darkness (thick and dark lines look heavier than thin and light lines)

Cubism - An art style developed in 1908 by Picasso where the artist breaks down the objects into geometric shapes and lines. Another artist known for cubism is Mondrian. He worked to find the perfect placement of lines and colors. His most famous works were made completely of squares and lines.

Abstract - A 20th century style of painting in which lines, colors, shapes, and forms replace the actual picture/image of objects, landscape, and figures. The subjects often blurred, repeated or broken down into basic forms so that it can’t be recognized.
