Aims and Objectives Aims Objectives:

First Aid First aid is the immediate treatment given to an injured person. When a suitably qualified person arrives on the scene they then take over the care of the person. Anyone with some knowledge of first aid can have a huge impact on the health of an injured person, so it is always useful to know basics. By completing a recognised first aid qualification you will gain a very good basic knowledge of what to do in an emergency situation.

Immediate Treatments It is necessary to establish what is wrong with the person. If they are laying on the ground you should follow the guidelines below: Assess the situation – identify any risks to yourself and to the casualty. Make the area safe, such as turning off an electric switch. Assess the casualty and give first aid if appropriate. Establish if the person is conscious and then check their ABC. A – Airway – do they have an open airway? B – Breathing – are they breathing? C – Circulation – check their circulation, by assessing their pulse. Try to get help as soon as possible Deal with the aftermath – complete an accident or incident report form

Unconscious Adult Casualty If you see a person lying on the ground, talk to them first and see if they respond – they may just be asleep! If they do not respond, speak to them with a louder voice, asking them if they are all right. If you still receive no response, gently shake them. If the person is not injured but is unconscious, they should be placed in recovery position

This position helps a semi-conscious or unconscious person breathe and allows fluids to drain from the nose and throat so they do not choke. The casualty should not be moved into the recovery position if you suspect that they have a major injury, such as a back or neck injury

How to put a person in the recovery position

Contents of a First Aid Box A first aid box should contain a number of items in order for a person to effectively administer first aid. The contents of a first aid box for a workplace or leisure centre must conform to legal requirements and must also be clearly marked and readily accessible. What items and materials should a first aid box contain?

Sterile adhesive dressings (plasters) – there should be a range of sizes for dressing minor wounds. Sterile eye pads – a sterile pad with a bandage attached to it to cover the eye following eye injuries. Triangular bandages – these can be used as a pad to stop bleeding, or to make slings, or used to as a sterile covering for large injuries such as burns. Large and medium wound dressings – a sterile, non-medicated dressing pad with a bandage attached to it. Disposable gloves – these should be worn at all times when dealing with blood or body fluids Face shield for resuscitation – this may be used to prevent contamination by the casualty’s vomit, blood or other body fluid.
