God’s Plan for Man’s Redemption (4)

God’s scheme of redemption (scheme means a plan, though often we think of the word as sinister or something secretive) Some times we need to step back and get the bigger picture God had a plan for man’s redemption Romans 15:4

God’s Plan from Eternity Included a seed promise Genesis 3:15, 12:1-3, etc. A throne promise – Gen. 49:8-10, 2 Samuel 7 Blood - Gen. 3:21, Exo. 12:13, Leviticus 16, 17, Hebrews 9:22 Jesus provided the blood for our sins and fulfilled both the seed and throne promise! Water – Gen. 6-7, Exodus 14 His word & Law - Exodus. 20, Jer. 31:31-34 Today we examine

Water: Water has been important in God’s works Noah – Gen. 6-8, the world cleansed, but Noah found grace – 1 Peter 3:20-21 Crossing the Red Sea – Exodus 14:13, 30, 1 Cor. 10:1-2

Water: Priests had to wash (purify) before entering the tabernacle – Exodus 29:4 A bronze laver (bath) sat before the door of the tabernacle Exodus 30:17-21 David’s penitential psalm – Psalm 51:1-2 https://924jeremiah.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/slide6.jpg

Water: John baptized – Luke 3:3, 16, John 3:23 Jesus baptized by John – Matthew 3:13-16 Nicodemus – John 3:5, one must be born of water and the Spirit to enter the kingdom of

Water Baptism The “Great Commission” – Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15-16 Saul – wash away your sins – Acts 22:16 1 Peter 3:20-21, as Noah saved through water so baptism now saves us

Water Baptism Let us draw near – having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water – Hebrews 10:19-22 Romans 6:3-4, we are buried with Him in baptism (immersion)

It was in His death on the cross that His blood was shed for our sins. "Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?" Romans 6:3 INTO CHRIST It was in His death on the cross that His blood was shed for our sins. Used with permission

It was in His death on the cross that His blood was shed for our sins. "We were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Romans 6:4 NEW LIFE INTO CHRIST It was in His death on the cross that His blood was shed for our sins. Used with permission

Covenants A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties (conditional or unconditional) OR a Law Genesis 6:18, “I will establish My covenant with you” (cf. Gen. 3:15) Genesis 9:8ff – the rainbow Gen. 15:18 – land promise to Abraham Gen. 17 – everlasting covenant with Isaac and his descendants (circumcision) Exodus 2:24 – God remembered His covenant with Abraham

The Old and New Covenants Another covenant – The Law of Moses at Mt. Sinai The “first covenant” Hebrews 8:7, 9:1, etc. It contained the Ten Commandments and other laws given through Moses to the people (sacrifices, tabernacle, moral laws, etc.) Together they are the Law of Moses - Luke 24:44

The Law (of Moses) Old Testament New Testament Event Genesis 16:15 Galatians 4:21-31 Ishmael and Isaac Exodus 20:17 Romans 7:7 “You shall not covet” Leviticus 19:18 Matt. 22:39 Love your neighbor Numbers 28:9-10 Matthew 12:4 Priests offered sacrifices on Sabbath and were blameless Deuteronomy 6:5 Matthew 22:36-37 Love God with your all Psalm 82:6 John 10:34 “I said you are gods” Isaiah 28:11 1 Cor. 14:21 “In the Law it is written…” The Theme of the Bible, Ferrell Jenkins, 1999

The Old and New Covenants The Law of Moses at Mt. Sinai A promise to the people Exodus 19:4-6 The people promised to keep the covenant (Ex. 24:3) Exodus 24:6-8, Moses sprinkled blood on the people and the Book of the Covenant (Hebrews 9:17-21, esp.19)

The Old and New Covenants But the people broke the covenant with God Deut. 9:15-16, Ezekiel 20:10-13 Jeremiah 31:32, the covenant which the fathers broke God was no longer obligated to them – harlotry (see Hosea, Jeremiah 3:6-17, etc.) But He did not forget His covenants A new covenant was promised Jeremiah 31:31-34

New Covenant fulfilled in Jesus Matthew 5:17-18, the Law remained till all was fulfilled On the cross, Jesus took the Old Law out of the way Colossians 2:13-14, Ephesians 2:14-16 Hebrews 8-10, esp. 8:7-13

New Covenant fulfilled in Jesus Galatians 3:15-24, Jesus fulfilled the seed promise This promise was 430 years BEFORE the Law of Moses was given The LOM could not give life to all mankind What was the purpose of the Law then? To bring us to Christ Gal. 3:19-25 The Law of Moses was fulfilled and replaced, but the covenant with Abraham was fulfilled for all

The word of God in His plan The word of God manifests His power to execute His will. His word reveals His will – 1 Cor. 2:10-16, Eph. 3:3-4 2 Peter 1:3, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – it makes us complete

The word of God in His plan Prophecy is a tool of God that declares His power & authority Isaiah 46:9-10, declaring the end from the beginning 2 Peter 1:19-21, holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Spirit 1 Peter 1:10-12

The word of God in His plan Only God can: Make a seed promise 2000 years before it happens (Gen. 12, Gal. 3) Create a Law through Moses to be fulfilled 1500 years later (Ex. 20, Gal. 3) 1000 years before establish an eternal throne (2 Sam. 7) 700 years before describe how this savior would suffer for our iniquities (Isa. 53) Only God can describe the affairs of man before they happen (Daniel, Isaiah 44:28, 45:1 – Cyrus, etc) As we step back, we see the hand of God at work fulfilling His plan for man’s redemption!

Romans 1:16, the Gospel is God’s power unto salvation! 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 the Gospel summarized!

Will you accept His plan? Jesus came to this earth and fulfilled God’s plan– He died to make it so! Will you accept His plan?
