Adding Fractions How to add two different fractions together

How much is blue? x 2 3 4 6 8 = x 2 These fractions are equivalent (equal value) You get twice as many slices, but they’re half the size, so it’s the same amount.

We can only add things with the same name 3 elephants + 2 elephants = ? 5 giraffes – 1 giraffe = ? 2 elephants + 3 giraffes = …? 5 elephants 4 giraffes 5 animals 4 boys + 3 girls = 7 what? We can only add things with the same name

To add two fractions: 1) Make the denominators the same. (by changing to an equivalent fraction: multiply top and bottom by the same number) 2) Add the numerators.
