Integrating Technology Into the Spanish Classroom RJ Baise: ED 310-02

Immediate Issue Google Translate Plagiarism Poor Time Management It’s one thing for students to use this translator on their homework, but it’s another thing to make it available to them inside the classroom as well. It is NOT (AT ALL) difficult to tell when a translator has ben used, but it is difficult to measure a student’s progress when they use one. Plagiarism Poor Time Management Predators

Online Classroom The majority of Spanish classes in U.S public schools are taught through computer programs. There are not enough Certified Spanish Teachers to go around

Benefits to Online Classrooms Students work at their own pace Students choose to work on activities from which they learn best Students are incorporating everyday use of technology into their academic schedules They can choose to access the sites at home

Spanish in the Traditional Classroom Researches have found that online Spanish classes are not near as successful as the traditional classroom setting “Language is a living thing, so the best way to learn a language is in interactive, authentic environments.” Researchers have also found that the integration of technology has strongly benefited Second Language Education in more ways than one.

Apps for Beginners Duolingo ¡Leamos! (Spanish/English specific) Memrise BBC Languages There are also SAFE sites and chatrooms where students can chat with other students from around the world, helping each other learn their languages.

Cultural Enhancement A major part of the curriculum for Spanish classrooms is not only about the language, but the different cultures that go along with it. Virtual Realities Google Maps Video Conferencing

Technology in Literacy Learning There are 4 ways technology is said to help improve literacy learning of another language: Word Processing: writing, vocabulary, sentence structure Technology in Text: Electronic books Communication: Through the internet, students can build partnerships with learning peers in target languages Online Information: students can search for valuable information from all over the world

Educational Websites FluentU Quizlet teaches language using strictly authentic materials such as news, music videos, movie trailers, commercials, cartoons, etc. Quizlet Teachers have found that this is one of the best sites for language learning, mostly for vocabulary Students can even go to the national news sites of other countries to watch news broadcasts. This exposes them to natural language speaking, whie also apllying their skills to the real world.

Audio and Visuals Language Skills consist of reading, writing, speaking and listening Teachers are encouraging their students to listen to popular music from other countries, for both cultural and listening benefits. Rather than writing their assignments down on paper and turning them in, foreign language teachers are having their students record themselves responding and submit the audio files.

Overall Differentiating Instruction WebQuests CyberGuides Multimedia Sites Content Rich Sites In summary, there is an unlimited amount of information on foreign languages on the internet, and teachers are doing everything they can to expose their students to native language and culture through its use.
