Graphing

New Vocabulary Transformation Reflection Translation

Transformation Changing a shape using • Turn • Flip • Slide, or • Resize

Reflection A reflection is a flip over a line When we reflect over the x-axis we change each (x,y) into (x,−y) When we reflect over the y-axis we change each (x,y) into (−x,y) Reflected Points are indicated with ‘

Reflection Over the X-Axis

Reflection Over the Y-Axis

Practice Reflect the following points over the X-axis: (1,2) Reflect the following points over the Y-axis (-3,-2)

Reflecting Shapes Reflecting each point that makes up the shape Must keep the name of each point The reflected points are indicated with ‘ (A A’)

Reflecting Shapes

Practice Please work on the following handouts!

Translation "Sliding": moving a shape without rotating or flipping it. The shape and point still looks exactly the same, just in a different place.

Translation Three units to the right and down two units

Practice Translate the point: 3 units to the left and 2 units up (3,5) (-2, 1) (-4,4) Translate the point: 1 units to the right and 3 units down (-2,2) (3,1) (5,4)

Translating Shapes Follow the “rule” for each point Connect the points to recreate the shape Mark each translated point with ‘

Translating Shapes

Practice Work on the following handouts!

Do Now: Provide an example of a reflection over the x-axis Provide an example of a reflection over the y-axis Provide an example of a translation
