Training updates FANALYTICS RAISING THE BAR COGNOS 11: WHAT’S NEW
Tableau 10.0 Sneak peek Here are two of the new analytical features available in Tableau 10.0 Cross Data Source Filtering Highlighting …Coming January 2017 you’ll be able to explore these and many more!
Tableau 10.0 – Cross data source filtering Apply a single filter across multiple data sources in a workbook If your data sources contain a common dimension and the worksheets in your dashboard share a filter based upon that field, there is an option to apply that filter to “All Using Related Data Sources.”
Tableau 10.0 - highlighting Similar to a filter, the highlighter tool allows interactive selection within views
Making Sense of Surveys We’re constantly trying to assess our world. Surveys are one tool we can use but how do we make sense of and the most of the data we collect? Must appropriately prepare the data in order to make best use of the tool Benefits of using a strong visualization tool with survey data
Surveys – Data preparation Typical survey data usually includes various types of questions Demographic questions (e.g. class year, department, gender, etc.) Yes / No / Maybe questions (e.g. did you intend to participate in the ‘x’ program) Likert Scale questions (rate strongly disagree, disagree, neither disagree nor agree, agree, or strongly agree) Check All That Apply questions In order to evaluate, the data needs to be “normalized” or flattened Tableau has an excel add-in that helps to format the data If extremely complex, there are other tools such as Alteryx Designer* * Note – this is not a sales pitch for a specific tool, only a mention of one possible solution.
Surveys - data Survey responses fall into two broad categories: Dimensions Opinions or intensions Possible to connect survey data to other data sources based upon a common data element (e.g. netid)
Surveys – data sample Identify question types Pivot data where necessary
Surveys – visualization tools The visualization tool allows you to quickly explore possible relationships and the usefulness and significance of those relationships Build dashboards for different audiences Filtering Interactivity
Surveys - Yes / No / Maybe visualization Sample of Yes / No / Maybe Select question(s)for display Compute and display results as percentage of total Show respondents’ feelings Work well when integrated with other survey questions
Surveys - Check-All-That-Apply visualization Sample of Check All That Apply Select question for display Display count of responses or calculate percentage
Check-all-that-apply sample
Surveys - likert scale question visualization Sample of a Likert visualization Considerations: Filter to a specific question Get a sense rating and how many made each selection Show overall sentiment
Likert visualization samples
Surveys – analysis sample Rename Dimensions Edit Aliases Create Calculated Fields
Surveys – analysis sample Calculated fields Table calculations
