Program Overview Maryland State Department of Education’s College Readiness and Completion Act of 2013 School districts are required to pay a portion of tuition for qualifying 11th and 12th graders who are also enrolled in college courses at any Maryland public state college or university

Dual Enrollment in PGCPS PGCPS pays: Tuition for ALL students dually enrolled in qualified courses at any Maryland state college or university for fall, spring, and/or summer sessions. Fees and textbooks for students who receive free and reduced meals. Fees may range from $30 – $300 per credit hour.

EXAMPLE – Calculation of fees General example of how fees are calculated: Registration/application fee -- $25 per semester College fees -- $45 per credit hour Example For a 3 credit course, approximate fees = (3 credit hours x $45/credit hour) + $25 = $160

Dual Enrollment in PGCPS Students must provide their own transportation to and from the college campus. This program is only for current PGCPS students and PGCPS non public special education students

Who is eligible for dual enrollment? BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment Program

To be eligible for participation in the program, students must: Be enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade on the first day of the semester in which the course is offered.  This will apply to rising 11th and 12th graders during the summer session. Demonstrate, via placement test, college readiness in math English and /or Reading. Results of Accuplacer, Compass, ACT and SAT may be used to determine readiness for college-level work.  Minimum scores for college readiness are listed in Appendix of the handbook. Maintain a 2.5 high school cumulative GPA.

Bowie State University is pleased to work with Prince George’s County Public Schools to offer their junior and senior high school students the opportunity to enroll in college courses. The courses taken will fall into three categories. It is important to note that in all cases, the courses taken at Bowie are college courses with the appropriate number of college level credits and that Bowie has earned regional accreditation from the Middle States Association. Category I: Courses which will satisfy high school graduation requirements. Classes in this category have been reviewed and accepted by PGCPS to satisfy high school graduation requirements. Category II: Courses which can serve as high school electives. These courses can serve to satisfy elective high school requirements. They cannot be used to satisfy core requirements. They will be listed on the high school transcript as electives. Category III: Courses in this category will not assist students in meeting high school graduation requirements and will not be placed on their high school transcript. These courses will serve solely as completed college courses which can serve as transfer credits in future college pursuits.

The Steps to enter the program are: Learn more about the specifics of the program by reading the BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment Handbook1. Meet with your School Counselor to discuss taking courses in the Dual Enrollment program. The two of you will want to discuss the courses offered and their impact on your high school career. Will the courses help you with graduation or will they serve you as you go on to college as transfer courses? Complete the following forms2: BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment Application form Supplemental Application form Dual Enrollment Registration form Learn more about the courses and the available sections by going to the Bowie State University website. The course schedule is located at: https://www.bowiestate.edu/bulldogconnection/. Include the information on the desired classes on the BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment Application.

Have the application approved by your Counselor and the Principal at your school. Send the application to the Continuing Education Office at Bowie State University. Include a copy of your transcript and scores from either the SAT, ACT or Accuplacer. These scores are crucial for placement into specific courses. Contact the Continuing Education Office at Bowie State University to discuss the courses being offered in the upcoming semester or session. You will need to schedule an appointment with the Director of Continuing Education to complete the admissions and registration process. Attend the BSU/PGCPS Dual Enrollment Orientation Session prior to the beginning of the semester for more information on attending the university. Students who are not a part of the Free and Reduced Meals Program will need to pay the fees associated with their registration once the registration process has been completed. Students in the Free and Reduced Meals program will pick up their textbooks from the Bulldog Card Office, located in the Student Center.
