Did you know?

AP/IB/DE Facts and Research FCPS pays for all AP/IB exams to reduce barriers for all students Honors courses are gateway courses to AP/IB courses in FCPS FCPS Students took a total of 37,291 AP Exams and 8,901 IB Exams in 2015 69,752 Students enrolled in Honors courses (Secondary) 15, 782 Students took AP exams, 3, 341 students took IB exams Of these students 5.4% of all students tested were Black; 9.1% Hispanic; 51.4% White; 5% Other, and 21% Asian Chris

AP/IB/DE Facts and Research “Dual enrollment students were 12% more likely to enter college within seven months of high school graduation than non-participating students.” “Dual enrollment students were 11% more likely to persist through the second year of college than non-participating students.” 1,296 students in FCPS enrolled in Dual Enrollment courses during the 2015-2016 school year. Students in FCPS enrolled in over 2,500 courses during the past school year. 208 (16%) FCPS dual enrollment students made NOVA’s Dean’s List for the spring 2016 semester. Other facts and information… Students can register and take AP exams for classes that they are not-enrolled Elementary and Middle School students regardless of their scores do not receive credit for AP exams for courses they are not enrolled. The College Board has FREE SAT preparation through Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/sat All MYP, IB DP and AP schools have coordinators AP schools have AP Testing coordinators and Academic coordinators 10th and 11th Students can apply for Summer Residential Governor’s School

Dual Enrollment Tom

Dual Enrollment College courses that are taught at high schools by FCPS teachers Typically English 12 & US Government but also includes certain CTE courses throughout FCPS Classes sponsored by NOVA are free Opportunity to earn transferable college credit while in HS that will meet high school graduation requirements as well Tom -Concurrent Enrollment different than Dual Enrollment -English 12 & Government...however, there are classes by GMU (Matrix Algebra)

How is Dual Enrollment in the high schools different than the other options for college credit? AP and IB Opportunity to receive college credit through a cumulative exam Receive college credit based on the score and their college’s policies Weighted grades SCHEV - July 1st, 2016 Dual Enrollment College courses taught in high school Receive college credit based on their grade in the class Transferability to other colleges depend on their college’s policies Grades of C or higher generally transfer Grades not weighted At no cost through NOVA Tom

Best Practices - Academic Advising Review transcripts for specific course strengths through trends and patterns Match courses with students’ strengths and interests and post-secondary plans Analyze data- Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), etc AP Potential Look at Young Scholars, AVID, and CPP students to ensure they are enrolled in rigorous classes Review Student Learning Plans Nurture potential and talent Counselors and teachers - nurture potential and talent - rethink soliciting input from teachers-- value the conversations you have with teachers, students, and families- all stakeholders

IB Diploma Requirements 6 IB Exams 4 HL and 2 SL, or 3 HL and 3 SL Most IB courses offered in two-year sequences Creativity, Action, and Service Project Theory of Knowledge - Critically examine different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language, and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical, and historical). Extended Essay - Requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying. Although not mandatory to pursue IB credits, the IB diploma is offered to our students. Here are the various diploma requirements. However, many students enroll in IB classes that they are proficient in and do not pursue the IB diploma. For example, while at MVHS, many of my students enrolled in IB English, IB History, while others enrolled in the IB Math and IB Science classes. IB Diploma candidates also IBCC - not offered at all schools

Dual Enrollment through NOVA DE students must apply to NOVA, meet college readiness standards and complete and submit a form in order to enroll in courses. All steps are generally handled within the school. Students are NOVA students and establish a college transcript through NOVA. NOVA Dual Enrollment classes can be used at NOVA or at many four-year colleges. -Concurrent Enrollment different than Dual Enrollment Transcripts process - how do we get? -English 12 & Government...however, there are classes by GMU (Matrix Algebra)

I wonder if we should do a flyover as in AP and IB after we open this dialogue. :)
