Let’s Keep the Garfield Library Great! Plans for Our 21st Century Library _____

Library Wisdom "How much do I love libraries? I'd give up my credit card before I'd give up my library card." Lisa Schroeder Author "My mother and father were illiterate immigrants from Russia. When I was a child they were constantly amazed that I could go to a building and take a book on any subject. They couldn't believe this access to knowledge we have here in America. They couldn't believe it was free." Kirk Douglas Actor "If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need." Cicero Roman Statesman, Philosopher, and Lawyer "What can I say? Librarians rule!" Regis Philbin American Media Personality Quotes from libraryquotes.org

Mission information and ideas. The goal of the library information and technology program is to ensure that students are effective users and producers of information and ideas.

HOW CAN WE MAKE SURE THIS GOAL IS ACHIEVED?

Objectives and Strategies First Year Plan Objectives and Strategies

Short-Term Objectives: Things that Should Happen Right Now Organize a library advisory committee Teacher-librarian 1-2 certificated staff members Classified staff member Administrator Parent Public library liaison Prioritize emphasis for library program from the three functions Survey staff on library program strengths and needs

Objectives for First Year Information Technology & Instruction Implement “Super 3” in K-2 and “Big 6” in 3-5 Align IT instruction with information literacy standards, educational technology standards, and common core standards. Teacher-librarian plays an active role in technology by joining technology committees at building and district levels. Reading Advocacy Reading program adoption and launch Reading events maintained: Book Fair Participation in WA Children’s Choice Picture Book Awards “Books and Blankets” Monthly library displays to promote reading Book talks Begin discussions toward establishing partnership with public library Information Management & Services Organize a Library Advisory Committee; begin program analysis and development of Garfield-specific collection development policy New library web site Begin addition of eBooks to curriculum—baby steps beginning with fifth grade classroom literature circle texts Create a draft library program curriculum map for yearlong predictability and success What will the functions of the LIT program look like in Year 1?

Fifth Year Vision Results and Outcomes

Information Technology & Instruction Information Management & Services Collaboration with staff in implementing “Super 3” and “Big 6” in the classroom as well as technology integration Staff development provided on information technology instruction topics Use of technology to facilitate assessment strategies; teacher-librarian assists with CBAs “BYOD” Co-teaching in classrooms/teacher-librarian support of units Reading Advocacy Full implementation of reading incentive program with increased student reading volume Reading events expanded to include author/illustrator visits 1-2 times per year, additional special events Increased participation in special events by families; more staff buy-in to school programs and events; seamless implementation of WA Children’s Choice Picture Book Awards Collaboration with teachers for reading advocacy beyond the library Established, consistent partnership with Olympia Timberland Regional Library Information Management & Services Library Advisory Committee fully established, meets at least two times a year (Sept, Jan) to address needs, reassess Library web site is used regularly to support students, families, and staff eReaders/tablets/iPods Increased digital library Curriculum map creates predictable, meaningful guide for library program Students evaluated at report card time; possible line item for LIT on report card? Teacher librarian’s focus is shifted from reading teacher to collaborating with teachers—technology focus Fifth Year Vision What will the program look like five years from now if these plans are implemented?

Plans for Change Prioritized focus on three essential functions of teacher-librarians: Information technology instruction Reading advocacy Information management and services Collaborate as a staff to revise these plans to fit the needs of our school— ongoing.
