Geographic and Economic Indicator Questions Answered

1. Looking at the employment categories, what similarities do you notice about countries with a high employment rate in agriculture? Generally they have a low GDP per Capita. For example, India, Kenya, and China have a low GDP and are primarily an Agrarian Economy.

2. What does the infant mortality rate imply about a nation? High infant mortality implies that the country cannot, or has not, invested in the heath of their people. Likewise, a low infant mortality rate suggests a high investment in the human capital. These factors are inversely related.

3. What is the correlation between the literacy rate of a country and the Gross Domestic Product Per Capita? Generally, the higher the literacy rate, the higher the GDP Per Capita. However, this is not always the case. China has a low GDP Per Capita and a high literacy rate. France’s literacy rate is higher than the U.S. but their GDP per capita is lower. Literacy rate and GDP cannot be the only factors when looking at standard of living.

4. What similarities do you notice among countries with a high percentage of employment in the Service industry? Generally they have a high GDP per capita.

5. Why do you think Kenya lacks data on the population employed in industry and the population employed in business? Mr. Whitworth thinks… this could be because their numbers are so low that it is hard to get accurate. It could be that many people in this country are nomadic. It could be that the country does not have the funds to find accurate measurements.

6. Look at the percentage of the populations below the poverty level for France and the United States. Does this statistic shock you? Why or why not? Answers will vary
