Year 6 Curriculum Newsletter SPRING TERM 2 DISCOVERY: GEOGRAPHY ‘Weather and Climate’ In this unit, we will be learning about the weather in a practical way so that we learn geography skills including: To be able to use and interpret globes and world maps in a variety of scales To be able to explain how climatic processes lead to similarities and differences between places To be able to make plans and maps in a variety of scales using symbols and keys To be able to explain how physical and human processes lead to similarities and differences between places To be able to use instruments to make measurements To be able to make local plans and world maps in a variety of scales using symbols and keys, some of which they have devised themselves ART WEEK: Linking to this unit, we will be studying the paintings of JMW Turner who studied the weather and produced very atmospheric paintings. We will be: Investigating symbols, shapes, form and composition (study Turner’s paintings) Using techniques, colours and effects to represent things seen, remembered or imagined. Exploring the effect of light and colour, texture and tone English: we will be reading a new class book (Skellig, by David Almond) which will support both writing and reading skills. We will produce a character description of the main character (whose will be revealed as we go through the story). These skills include: Creating atmosphere and integrating dialogue, Inverted commas, Adverbial phrases, Commas for clarity, Dash, Clause structure, Semi-colons, Noun phrases, Adverbs, Prepositional Phrases We will then use our learning from Discovery (Weather and Climate) to produce a piece of PERSUASIVE WRITING on climate change Passive voice, Modal verbs, Clause structure variety, Cohesive devices, Semi-colons, Colons, Dash, Inverted commas, Commas for clarity, Parenthesis ,, -- () Maths – We have used the children’s assessments to plan the next term’s units. These are: Place value, negative numbers and rounding recap Solving problems involving numbers Using data, reading tables and line graphs Calculating the mean Mental and written calculation of decimals and money Related word problems Calculating with different units of measure Ratio and proportion FDP comparisons Revision of ALL calculation (whole numbers and fractions) PSHE: An important issue in year 6: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds We will also be promoting these school values: courage, appreciation, and understanding PE The children will be learning skills to play a game of TENNIS: holding the racquet, sustaining rally's, volleys and playing games. Their indoor PE session will be learning how to play Dodgeball ! Computing: the children will be using ‘Inkscape’ software to develop their artistic side, producing tessellations and repeated patterns on screen. RE: WE will be studying Christianity through this thought-provoking learning question: Is Christianity still a strong religion 2000 years after Jesus was on Earth? Forces: In Science, we’ll be finding out: • How a ball flies through the air • How different objects fall • What gravity is and how it pulls on objects • How air resistance affects moving objects • How water pushes up on floating objects • Why some objects float and others sink In Technology, we’ll be finding out: How to make a sailing boat or flying paper plane  In Music, we’ll be finding out: • How to play our homemade instruments In International, we’ll be finding out: • About sound and light pollution
