Means by which visual elements are organized DESIGN PRINCIPLES Principles of Design: Means by which visual elements are organized

Balance- the achievement of equilibrium. DESIGN PRINCIPLES Balance- the achievement of equilibrium. Two types of Balance: Symmetrical- near or exact matching of left & right sides of a 3-D form or 2-D composition. Asymmetrical- two sides that are not the same.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Symmetrical Balance/ Asymmetrical Balance

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Emphasis(main focal point)- an area designed in such a way (with spot, figure, color) as to draw our attention. Subordination (secondary focal point)- areas less emphasized to support our attraction to the main are of emphasis.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Repetition- visual elements repeated variations give a composition unity, continuity, flow and emphasis. Rhythm- Created through the regular recurrence of elements with related variations.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

All parts working together to create coherent, harmonious look. DESIGN PRINCIPLES Unity- the appearance or condition of oneness (integrated). All parts working together to create coherent, harmonious look.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Proportion- the relationship of parts to a whole and to one another. Silhouette: Hourglass Wedge-Invert triangle Rectangular-full Triangular-bell

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Hourglass- bust and hips are basically the same circumference though the bust can be up to 1” larger than the hips. The waist is then 9” or more smaller than the bust.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Wedge (Inverted Triangle)- the bust is 3.6” or larger than the hips and the waist is less than 9” smaller than the bust.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Rectangle (full)- where the bust and hips are basically the same circumference. The waist is less than 9” smaller than the bust.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES Triangle (bell/spoon)- where the hips are 2” or more larger than the bust. The waist is less than 9.25” smaller than the bust.

Warm hue YELLOW, ORANGE & RED

COOL HUES BLUE, GREEN & WHITE

Let’s Review: What are the four major principles of design? Name the two types of emphasis? Give an example of rhythm? Name 3 cool hues?
