Introduction

The job role Typical day preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes marking work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupils' progress researching new topic areas, maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge devising and writing new curriculum materials; selecting and using a range of different learning resources undertaking pastoral duties, such as taking on the role of form tutor preparing pupils for qualifications and external examinations; managing pupil behaviour in the classroom and on school premises participating in and organising extracurricular activities, such as outings, social activities participating in departmental meetings, parents' evenings and whole school training events; liaising with other professionals, such as learning mentors, educational psychologists undergoing regular observations and continuing professional development (CPD); The job role

Monday to Thursday Duty 8.00 am to 8.30 am Session 1 (including 20 mins breakfast) 8.30 am to 11.50 am Personal Tutorial 11.50 am to 12.10 pm Session 2 (including 40 mins lunch) 12.10 pm to 4.00 pm Tea Break 4.00 pm to 4.20 pm Professional Development Time 4.20 pm to 5.15 pm OR Session 3 (including 20 min tea break) 4.00 pm to 5.15 pm Plus evening and weekend work either lesson planning or marking

Work experience is key to an application Getting into teaching The options are: PGCE - A full-time, part-time or modular Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education is available at many universities and colleges. Applications are made via the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) RTP - The Registered teacher programme is a two-year programme combining classroom work and the completion of a degree which confers QTS. The Teach First scheme gives the opportunity to teach for two years and then either stay in teaching or move on to roles in the public sector or business GTP - The Graduate teacher programme graduates are employed as unqualified teachers and paid a salary. This is a highly competitive scheme for those with considerable relevant in school experience. Work experience is key to an application

Progress and Pay There are a number of ways in which teachers can progress in their careers, either within the classroom or in a leadership role. a particular subject as head of department, faculty or curriculum a particular age group as head of year or key stage coordinator a particular area such as special educational needs Newly qualified teachers (NQTs) rises incrementally from £21,588 to £31,552 for England and Wales. London salaries can differ
