One World Week

Miss Simmons friend Alle has been sending us emails and pictures from her travels around the world. We became quite interested in llamas so we created our own llama pictures using cotton wool And googly eyes. Alle saw llamas in Cusco where the traditional farmers (pictured) use the llamas to transport their goods.   She also saw llamas in Machu Picchu in Peru. Llamas live in the Andes mountain region along the west coast of South America in the countries of Peru, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.

We also learnt about a traditional form of dress called a poncho We also learnt about a traditional form of dress called a poncho. We designed our own using traditional colours and patterns.

Today’s weavings in Peru still use the Inca’s geometric square Designs and stylised animals, birds, frogs, snakes and fish.   We created our own designs.

We also found about different aspects of Peru.   Machu Picchu is one of the new Seven wonders of the world AND a UNESCO World heritage site. It was built by the Incas in the 1400s and is one of the only Traditional sites not be destroyed by the Spanish ivaders because it is so hard to find.   Lake Titcaca-is Quechuan for Puma because the lake itself is shaped like a Puma head. It’s the biggest lake in South America and the home to many Traditional communities.

We also found about different aspects of Bolivia Most traditional clothing has geometric patterns and vibrant colours. Dresses, skirts, tunics, blankets, and ponchos are the main clothes that are still traditional.  For over a thousand years, men and women both have used these designs.    Bolivia is home to salt flats ‘Salar de Uyani’. This is the worls’d largest salt flat, it’s Over 4,000 square miles large! 40,000 years ago it used to be a lake but it dried out during the ice age. As it’s so flat it’s a great place to take photos using perspective.

In ICT we found out about famous Argentinian footballers.

Carnival is the biggest annual celebration in Brazil Carnival is the biggest annual celebration in Brazil. Everybody celebrates it in one way or another, across the entire country. Offices, schools and shops close for anything up to ten days.
