Global winds

wind the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure.

The greater the pressure difference, the faster the winds move. Differences in air pressure are caused by uneven heating of the earth. The equator receives more direct solar energy than other latitudes.

Air travels in large, circular patterns called convection cells. Convection cells are separated by pressure belts. Pressure belts are bands of high pressure and low pressure found about every 30◦ of latitude.

Coriolis effect the apparent curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth’s rotation

Jet stream a narrow belt of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere.

A combination of convection cells and the Coriolis effect produces patterns of air circulation called global winds.

Polar easterlies prevailing winds that blow from east to west between 60 and 90 latitude in both hemispheres.

Trade winds prevailing winds that blow northeast from 30 north latitude to the equator and that blow southeast from 30 south latitude to the equator

doldrums Area around the equator where there is very little wind because the warm, rising air creates an area of low pressure. The name doldrums means “dull” or “sluggish.”

Horse latitudes areas at about 30 north and 30 south latitude where sinking air creates an area of high pressure. The winds at these locations are weak.
