I’ll be around to stamp your homework. Turn and Talk Talk about how you analyzed The Giving Tree last night. What discoveries did you make in your analysis? I’ll be around to stamp your homework. If you’re behind, just keep in mind that I’m collecting these on Thursday.

Psychoanalytic Theory An Introduction

Psychoanalytic Theory Examines a character’s personality, state of mind, feelings, desires (Think: case study) Identifies influences on a character’s thoughts and behaviors ∴ make meaning by analyzing the mental and emotional state(s) of a character Source: Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute

How can you apply this theory? Try asking questions like… Who or what are the character’s biggest influences? How do these influences impact their values and beliefs? How do these values and beliefs influence their actions?

Application to Maleficent What made the biggest impact on King Stephen during his childhood? How did King Stephen’s childhood impact his decisions as king? When did King Stephen first lose his grip on reality? Why is this significant?

Your packet (in its entirety) is due TOMORROW (Thursday). Homework Read Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. Analyze the text using what you’ve learned about Psychoanalytic Theory and our class model that analyzes Maleficent. Your packet (in its entirety) is due TOMORROW (Thursday). By tomorrow, have selected a text that you’re interested in analyzing. Tomorrow is a work day; be prepared to start outlining.
