Making sense of phrasal verbs with “look”

What´s a phrasal verb? A compound verb formed by one of the following combinations: Verb and adverb; Verb and preposition; Verb with both adverb and preposition.

What’s the “role” of the phrasal verbs? Phrasal verbs are an essential part of the English language (especially spoken). Simple combinationscause the learner few problems: “sit down” “stand up”

Problems? Difficulties begin when the combination of verb, adverb and/or preposition is “idiomatic”: when the meaning of the combination as a whole is different from the meanings of its separate parts. example: The verb “break” and the adverb “down” Vs “break down”
