What Are Natural Disasters? Any event or force of nature that causes catastrophic repercussions

What Causes Natural Disasters? Excessive rain- Floods Volcanoes eruptions- Earthquakes Earthquakes-Mudslides, Tsunamis, avalanches Sudden change in climate or temperature-Drought, polar vortex ,(extreme temperatures) thunderstorms Global warming- Change in ocean currents, stronger storms(tornadoes ,hurricanes) Lightning with drought - Forest fires

Geological Hazards Avalanches Earthquakes Volcanoes eruptions Tsunamis

Video Avalanches An avalanche is a very large slide of snow or rock down a mountainside. It’s caused when a buildup of snow is released down a slope. It is a major danger in the mountains. It is caused by sounds or shockwaves of sounds. It is dangerous and sometimes deadly.

Earthquakes A phenomenon that results from a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth’s crust. This creates seismic waves. They can destroy cities. Video

Volcanoes An eruption at the weak spots of the Earth’s crust, where it is easiest for magma to burst through. Extremely hot. It cools down and turns black. Video

Tsunamis A series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. The name is Japanese and it causes major floods. Video

Meteorological Hazards Droughts Floods Tornadoes Hurricanes Forest fires Ice storms

Droughts A drought is a period of time when there is not enough water to support agricultural, urban, human, or environmental water needs. This can wipe out a city. It occurs over time and results in a loss of food for the population.

Floods A flood is an overflow of water. It is an expanse of water that submerges land. Video

video Tornadoes A violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cloud base and the surface of the Earth. The warm and cold air mix together.

Tsunamis A tropical cyclone characterized by a low pressure center and thunderstorms. This results in strong winds and flooding rain. The rainstorms cause flooding and the winds cause damage. Video

Forest Fires A forest fire is an uncontrollable fire, often occurring in wild land areas. It can consume houses or agricultural resources. It is difficult to stop the spread.

Ice Storms A severe weather condition with freezing precipitation. Such a storm forms a glaze on objects, creating hazardous travel conditions and horrible living conditions. Loss of power frequently occurs, sometimes for extended periods of time.

Which Would Most Likely Occur In Montreal? Ice Storms We are very lucky that Canada does not suffer much from Natural Disasters. This is due to our geographic location. Ice Storm ’98 Over 100 mm of ice Frozen power lines led over 100 000 people to seek refuge 535 200 insurance claims after the storm Over 1 billion dollars in damages

Earthquakes Although they are not huge, we do get small earthquakes because we are on a fault line!

Water spouts

What Are The Effects Of Natural Disasters? Deaths Chaos Financial problems Loss of homes for animals Less usable land Tension between government and people Homelessness Destruction of buildings Loss of jobs Pollution
