Year 3 What makes the earth angry? Geography How are the volcanoes and earthquakes created? History Researching about different famous volcanic eruptions from the past (Pompeii) and earthquakes (Haiti). WOW: Letter in a bottle from the victims of Haiti asking for help from the children. LC1 1. What causes a volcano to erupt and which are the most famous volcanoes in the world? LC2 2. Can they describe how volcanoes have an impact on people’s lives? LC3 4. Can they explain why a locality has certain human features? LC4 5. Can they explain why a place is like it is? LC5 6. Can they explain how the lives of people living in the Mediterranean would be different from their own? LC6 LC6 Reflection: Children to create a Fronter Room/Website using the information they have learned. LC7 WOW: Pupils to have opportunities to consider questions they would want to ask the people of Haiti. Literacy Link: LC1 -Presents opportunities for children to find out information about Pompeii. LC2 - Children will have the opportunity to write a diary entry. LC5 – Presents opportunities for children to write a non-chronological report. Numeracy Link: Opportunities in LC1 for children to carry out surveys and to present information in data and statistical forms Creative Art Link: Children will design and create their own volcanoes using salt dough whilst also experimenting with colour mixing. Escape From Pompeii – Christina Ballit 8 Days: Story of Haiti – Edwidge Danticat Running Wild – Michael Morpurgo Forest Academy

Year 3 : What makes the earth angry? Year 3 : History, Geography and Science Geography History Science Can they describe how volcanoes have an impact on people’s life? Can they confidently describe human features in a locality? Can they explain why a locality has certain human features? Can they explain why a place is like it is? Can they explain how the lives of people living in the Mediterranean would be different from their own? Can they describe how volcanoes are created? Can they describe how earthquakes are created? Can they confidently describe physical features in a locality? Can they locate the Mediterranean and explain why it is a popular holiday destination? Can they recognise the 8 points of the compass (N,NW, W, S, SW, SE, E, NE)? Can they name a number of countries in the Northern Hemisphere? Can they locate and name some of the world’s most famous volcanoes? Can they explain why a locality has certain physical features? Can they explain how people’s lives vary due to weather? Can they use maps and atlases appropriately by using contents and indexes? Can they use their mathematical knowledge to work out how long ago events would have happened? Can they suggest why certain people acted as they did in history? Can they use various sources of evidence to answer questions? Can they use various sources to piece together information about a period in history? Can they research a specific event from the past ? Can they use their ‘information finding’ skills in writing to help them write about historical information? Can they compare and group together different rocks based on their simple physical properties? Can they describe and explain how different rocks can be useful to us? Can they describe and explain the differences between sedimentary and igneous rocks, considering the way they are formed? Can they describe how fossils are formed within sedimentary rock? Can they classify igneous and sedimentary rocks? Can they begin to relate the properties of rocks with their uses? Year 3 (Challenging) Can they begin to use more than one source of information to bring together a conclusion about an historical event? Can they use specific search engines on the Internet to help them find information more rapidly? Forest Academy

Year 3: What did the Ancient Greeks ever do for us? LC1 What causes a volcano to erupt and which are the most famous volcanoes in the world? LC2 Can they describe how volcanoes have an impact on people’s lives? The learning challenge will start with listening to a volcanic eruption video and drawing a pictures of what they can hear. Children will have the opportunity to generate questions about the events in Pompeii. Children have the opportunity to ask questions about volcanoes. They will use video clips, information pages and websites to answer questions about how and why volcanoes erupt. They will also use the information that they have gathered to create an information page. They will look at the parts of the volcano and make a model of a volcano. The learning challenge will start with a letter in a bottle from Pompeii. Children will have the opportunity to write a diary entry. They will identify WMaG diary entry. They will also use the information that they have gathered to hot seat one another on the experience and record interview of an eye witness from Pompeii. Read Escape From Pompeii – Christina Ballit- children to act out the characters and record on Ipads. LC3 What causes an earthquake? Children will hear a news report from an earthquake struck region. Children will look into why the earthquake occurred, focusing on the movement of the earth’s plates and the different types of rocks. They will carry out experiments identifying different rock types using Venn and Caroll diagrams and creating their own fossils. LC4: Can they explain why a place is like it is? Children will identify and compare natural and human features of a region affected by earthquakes, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shops. Children will be given opportunities to research about earthquakes and their locations. Children will generate their own questions and be given time to use ICT to find the answers. Children will present their findings using I book on the I pad. Forest Academy

Year : Title LC5: Can they explain how the lives of people living in the Mediterranean would be different from their own? LC6 Reflection: Children to create a Fronter Room/Website using the information they have learned. Children will be introduced to the book Read Escape From Pompeii – Christina Ballit. Children will be introduced to the first section of the book (until the volcano erupts), where they will write a setting description using their senses. Then children will imagine they are a character from the book, via hot seating and role play. They will then write a letter to a friend telling them about what they have experienced. Children will work in groups to create their own boxes for the class Fronter Room. There will be a focus on planning, creating and collaborating. Children will look back at each weeks learning challenge in order to create their page. The Fronter Room will be interactive with children asking questions and using their ICT skills to insert web links, pictures and videos. Forest Academy
