A Web Quest For Tolerance MacKinnon Middle School Teachers Adapted from: All In A Summer's Day: Discrimination by Melanie O'Hare Part 1

Introduction Part 1 ARE YOU READY?! As a member of your school’s planning team, you have been assigned the task of researching and presenting a slide show on tolerance. Your director has instructed you to use the famous short story by Ray Bradbury entitled “All Summer in a Day” as a starting point in addressing this issue. To prepare yourself for this task, you and your teammates will read Author Bradbury’s story, “All Summer in a Day” . Following your reading you will join together in a discussion of the stories main points. ARE YOU READY?!

Process Step 1: After you and your team have read and discussed “All Summer in a Day” visit the following website to read and learn about one organizations definition of tolerance. Tolerance.org: What Is 'Tolerance'? Step 2: Discuss this definition with your team. Share examples of how we show respect to those who are different than ourselves.

Process Cont…. Step 3: In an MS Word document describe the meaning of “tolerance” in your own words. Include concrete examples of tolerance and intolerance from your own personal experience. Step 4: With your teammates explore and discuss the following website. Your director will conduct your team’s web research. Step 5 Activities Interview the other people in your group. Find out their ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Ask them what they feel are important parts of their culture. Use the CIA Factbook to find out information about these areas where their families (ancestors) were from. Include information on location, size, ethnic groups, beliefs, literacy rate, climate, and whatever else you feel is relevant. Compare (not judge) the various cultures. How are they alike? How are they different? Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of what you have learned. Use this MS Word template to write your findings. Back to the Process

Process Cont…. Step 6: Think about the Ray Bradbury story you read at the start of this project. Use an MS Word document to write about the story, “All Summer in a Day” . Address the following questions in your write-up. Refer back to the story to refresh your memory. Why doesn’t Margot fit in with the other children? What do the children consider to be Margot’s “biggest crime of all”? Give at least three specific examples from the story of things the children hated about Margot. Have you ever been in a situation, like Margot, where you felt like you didn’t fit in? How did it make you feel? Step 7: Type your name at the top of each MS Word document you completed in steps 3, 5 and 6 . Print out your work and hand it into your director (teacher).

Introduction Part 2 Your school’s planning team is so impressed with your recent work on exploring tolerance, they have asked you to create a graphic representation of intolerance as depicted in your classroom reading. Once your graphic representation is complete, you will be putting it together with your other pieces on tolerance and displaying it in a slideshow. ARE YOU READY?!

Procedure Part 2 Step 1a: You are going to make an Inspiration concept map of the main character of the novel we are reading in class. As a Reminder: 6th Grade- Stanley Yelnats 7th Grade- Joey Pigza 8th Grade- Max or Freak Step 2a: Open an Inspiration document via the following path: My Computer, Applications on Alfred H, Inspiration Folder, Insp7

Process Part 2 Cont…. Step 3a: In the middle of the map you will place the character’s name. You will then make connections to how this character has come up against people who are intolerant to him in some way. You need to include specific examples from the book where the character has experienced someone being intolerant to him. (You will be able to add to this map at a later date, once we have read more of the book in class). Step 4a: From each of the examples that you sight from the book, you need to add another connection to explain how that character reacted to the intolerance.

Process Part 2 Cont…. Using a PowerPoint document, create a slideshow to display all of your work from parts 1 & 2 of this project. Don’t forget to include a cover slide and a list of websites and books you may have used. Your director (teacher) will provide time for each of you to share your slideshow with your teammates.
