Creating Interdependent Multilayered Networks (a group project)

Overview Project Goal, Data, Real and synthetic layers (already created), Quest: Create Interdependent Multilayered Network.

Goal To create an interdependent multilayered network: We have the layers (next slides) Question: how do we create the connection between layers?

Data used to create the layers

Creating the Network NTC uses the Decisive Action Training Environment (DATE) which is supported by many publications DATE Version 2.2 DATE Network Overview TC 7-100.2 Opposing Force Tactics TC 7-100.3 Irregular Opposing Forces NTC Red Book FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY

Definitions: DATE The Decisive Action Training Environment (DATE) is a very detailed training scenario. The scenario provides of five OEs in the Caucasus region; specifically the countries of Ariana, Atropia, Gorgas, Minaria, and Donovia. Atropia is the oil exporting nation U.S. forces are deployed to support. It is loosely based on the nation of Azerbaijan. Donovia is a militarily superior invading enemy nation. It is loosely based on the Russian Federation.

The layers of the multilayered network

The Network’s layers Each relationship is a layer in a multilayered network Political (based on scenario data) Military (hybrid of synthetic and real data) based on: Combat Power (synthetic based on doctrinal models) Capabilities (based on Army doctrine) Economic (based on scenario data) Social (based on scenario data): Shared Ideology and social identity Family Friends Activities Information (synthetic layer) based on: Cell Phone Communication (synthetically created) FM Radio Communication (synthetically created) Satellite Phone Communication (synthetically created) We now present each layer separately

Collective nodes are sized larger than individuals Political Layer Political actors can mobilize group identity, ideas, beliefs, action and violence to enhance their power and control over society, people, territory and resources. Two types of nodes: Individuals Sets of people (country, units, towns) We created directed edges demonstrating political influence. Data driven network Collective nodes are sized larger than individuals

Within the Military Layer: Combat Power Sublayer (1) Correlation of Forces Model BDEs have greater FE than the sum of their BNs BNs have greater FE than the sum of their companies There is value in cooperation and support capabilities (combined arms) We seek to model this phenomenon Doctrinally driven network

Within the Military Layer: Combat Power Sublayer (2) Combined Arms BDE FEBDE = 63 Compute the value of Bb: Evaluate the combat power of v when supported by battalion elements, BNPowerv

Within the Military Layer: Combat Power Sublayer (3) Create a battalion join, Jb, from Pb and Qb Assign a value to the degree of Pb, Bb. Evaluate the combat power of v when supported by battalion elements, BNPowerv Combined Arms BDE FEBDE = 63

Within the Military Layer: Combat Power Sublayer (4) Create a brigade join, JBDE from Pv and Qv Compute a weigth for each brigade: Compute the combat power of v when supported by brigade elements, BDEPowerv

Within the Military Layer: Combat Power Sublayer (5) Create a brigade join, JBDE from Pv and Qv Compute the weight D for each brigade Compute the combat power of v when supported by brigade elements, BDEPowerv Combined Arms BDE FEBDE = 63

Within the Military Layer: Capability Sublayer Companies, cells, or other units are nodes assigned to set U and connected to set C Capabilities (set C) ABCT - METL from DTMS BTG and BFB - similar U.S. Army unit’s METL and Army publications SPF, PAL, and cartel - Army publications All capabilities (set C) are assigned a relationship to the warfighting function or military function (set F) they support. Doctrinally driven network BFB Capabilities Nodes sized by set

Economic Layer Nodes Edges Economic variable Data driven network Individuals Collective Edges Employment relationships Black market activity Economic variable Individual behaviors Aggregate behaviors Production Distribution Data driven network

Social Layer Two types of nodes: Sublayers: Individuals Small nodes are individuals, larger ones are collective groups Two types of nodes: Individuals Collective groups Sublayers: Family Friends Activities Shared Ideology and social identity (displayed on the right, and in the .zip folder) based on: Cultural Religious Ethnic Identity Behaviors Values Four complete graphs (not so interesting yet). We can add the other three layers.

Information Layer (synthetic) Information variable: effects of individuals, organizations, and systems that Collect Process Disseminate Act on information. Nodes: represent individuals. Edges: represent communication between two individuals for a particular mode of communication We created a synthetic layers (combining random graphs, preferential attachment models and DATE) based on possible communication as: FM Radio Satellite Phone Cell phone

Information Layer (overview) BTG ABCT BFB Atropian SPF PAL Division Tactical Group (DTG) Brigade Tactical Group (BTG) Special Purpose Forces (SPF) Criminal Organizations: Cartel Guerrilla organization: Bilasuvarian Freedom Brigade (BFB) Insurgent Organization: Provisional Army of Lezgin (PAL) Cartel
