New Arrivals Early 20th century immigrants were mostly from south and central Europe Most new immigrants came the US planning to earn enough money to buy land back home

Chinese Exclusion Act 1882-1943 most Chinese were barred from entering the US First law to exclude immigration of a people group based on race Only allowed through as a travelers, merchants, teachers and students Barred because of political instability in China Many were smuggled in because of the need for workers

Immigrants from the East Angel Island- ‘Ellis Island of the West’ Located in the San Francisco Bay Didn’t allow many through Detention place for Chinese Immigrants Both Japanese and Chinese faced intense prejudice and racism
